Bears To Battle Huskies For Simpson Cup
No. 10 Cal Set For Dual With No. 5 Washington
The No. 10 California women's rowing team will battle No. 5 Washington for the coveted Simpson Cup this Saturday on the Golden Bears' home course of Redwood Shores. The Bears are looking to take back the Simpson Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race, for the first time since sweeping the dual races in 2024's matchup.
Â
The races will begin at 9:40 a.m. PT on Saturday, with the trophy presentation scheduled for 11:15 a.m. The dual will be
shown live on BAOSN and
live results can be accessed here.
Â
Cal is coming off a strong outing at the San Diego Crew Classic, in which the Bears had all five of their entries finish in the top three of their respective events. Cal's third varsity eight and second varsity four each claimed second place in their events behind Washington, while the other three Cal crews came in third place behind No. 2 Texas and the Huskies.
Â
At last season's dual with Washington, the Bears' second varsity four, third varsity eight and fourth varsity eight picked up wins over the Huskies. Washington's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four claimed the head-to-head victories.
Â
The Simpson Cup – named after and donated by longtime Washington supporters Hunter and Dottie Simpson, whose daughter, Anne, rowed at Cal – dates back to 1977 with the Huskies owning a 27-21 series lead. The Bears, however, have won 16 of the last 21 matchups between the varsity eights.
