Cal Renews Rivalry With Washington
No. 2 Bears, No. 1 Huskies Set To Square Off In Redwood Shores
The longest-running rowing rivalry on the West Coast will continue this Saturday in Redwood Shores as the No. 2 California men's rowing team and No. 1 Washington will face off in a highly anticipated dual.
The annual head-to-head competition between the Golden Bears and the Huskies, which dates back to 1903, will feature dual races between the first through fourth varsity eights in addition to the freshmen eights. Racing begins at 9:10 a.m. PT and will be
shown live on Overnght, with
live results also available here.
This marks the 114th all-time matchup of the Cal and Washington varsity eights, with the coveted Schoch Cup at stake this weekend. The perennial trophy is given to the winner of the V8+ race and is named after Delos "Dutch" Schoch of Washington's class of 1936. Schoch was an alternate for the Huskies' Olympic boat at the 1936 Berlin games. Washington retained the Schoch Cup last year on its home turf at the Montlake Cut in Seattle by inches, squeezing past the Bears' V8+ on the last stroke to finish just .3 seconds ahead. The two programs have split the last four meetings, with Washington taking the most recent two, while Cal won the two priors.
Also historic matchups, the second varsity eight series and the freshmen eight series between the Bears and the Huskies both began in 1939. Washington won the 2V8+ race last year, but Cal's freshmen 8+ came out on top in the race between the novice boats.
Cal is coming off a productive outing at the Princeton Invitational two weeks ago. The Bears' varsity eight remained unbeaten this season with a win over No. 5 Brown, No. 9 Syracuse and No. 11 Yale, in addition to head-to-head wins over No. 4 Princeton and Yale. The crew was named MPSF Varsity Eight of the Week for the third time this season following its performance in New Jersey. Cal's third varsity eight claimed wins over the same set of opponents at the invitational, while the second varsity eight won its dual with Yale and took second place in its other two races.
