Cal Hires Richard Midgley As Deputy GM For Men’s Basketball

Midgley Is A 2006 Cal Grad, Former NBA Scout

The California men's basketball program welcomes home a former Golden Bear in Richard Midgley, who has been hired as deputy general manager for men's basketball. A 2006 Cal graduate, Midgley has been serving in the Brooklyn Nets scouting department and also has experience as a financial advisor and basketball coach.

As deputy general manager on head coach Mark Madsen's staff, Midgley will serve as chief operating officer for Cal men's basketball, overseeing all off-court operation, strategic planning and roster management. His role will also include NIL coordination, transfer portal strategy, budget management and alumni relations.

"We are so pleased to have Richard back at Cal," Co-Directors of Athletics Jenny Simon-O'Neill and Jay Larson said of Midgley. "There is no one better to step into this new role, which is so important for our men's basketball program. This deputy GM position allows our coaching staff to focus on player development, in-game strategy and on-court coaching. Not only does Richard know Cal, he knows the basketball landscape at every level and will be a crucial part of this program's upward trajectory."

Midgley was a four-year starter for the Bears from 2002-06 and scored over 1,000 points in his Cal career while helping his teams make two NCAA tournament appearances. A native of England, he moved to California and attended high school at Modesto Christian, where he later taught and served as head coach.

"I'm excited to return to Cal in this role," Midgley said. "I look forward to working with Coach Madsen and his staff, applying my player evaluation experience to support the continued growth and success of the program."

Midgley has worked as a financial advisor and NBA scout with the Atlanta Hawks and most recently the Brooklyn Nets, where he worked alongside another Cal basketball alum in Nets General Manager Sean Marks. Midgley brings eight years of NBA level experience in player evaluation to his position with the Bears.

"My time with the Brooklyn Nets, learning from Sean Marks and the front office group there, was incredibly valuable," Midgley added. "The perspective I gained — especially in roster construction and organizational alignment — will stay with me as I step into this role at Cal."

"We are building something great here at Cal, and Richard's role is going to be a cornerstone for that," Madsen said of Midgley. "I have a ton of respect for him and his experience, and I know he is the right fit for our program."

Midgley joins a Cal program that made big strides in 2025-26 in recording the most wins in a season (22) since 2016 and its first postseason win since 2014. Last season's squad also recorded eight games with 90-plus points scored and had five players ranked in top-100 national statistical categories.
