BERKELEY- California rugby will welcome 12 newcomers to Berkeley for the 2026-27 academic year as the Golden Bears embark on their 145th season in program history. The Bears have a mix of seven in-state student-athletes, one out-of-state, and four international.
"We really like this class, not only is there extraordinary rugby potential in the group, they are all accomplished students and young men of significant character," head coach Jack Clark said. "Individually and collectively they are a great fit with our team and University, and we are honored to have them with us."

IN STATE
Ryan Scully
Ryan is a 5-foot-10, 210-pound center who comes from Encinitas. The U.S. citizen attended La Costa Canyon High School in Carlsbad. He earned Most Valuable Player honors as a freshman and was a First-Team All-Southern California selection. After missing his sophomore season with injury, Scully went on to be named the Most Valuable Player again on the varsity squad his junior year, earning the Captain's Award, and was again selected to the All-Southern California First Team. During his senior season, La Costa finished the season 7-2, finishing the season ranked as the sixth best team in the nation.
Scully also played football for La Costa Canyon high school and was team captain his senior year. He was a First-Team All-Avocado League selection (widely regarded as the top league in San Diego), a First-Team All San Diego CIF Section, and the La Costa Canyon Defensive Player of the Year. His team finished the season 9–1, winning their second straight league championship and finishing the season ranked No. 8 in California. Scully was selected as a starting linebacker for the All-San Diego Defense, named to the Los Angeles Chargers Spanos Classic All-Star Team, and a recipient of the National Football Foundation Walter J. Zable / San Diego Chapter Scholar-Athlete Scholarship in 2026, awarded for excellence in academics, leadership, and high school football.
Scully played club rugby for the Encinitas Dragons in 2023, where he was the Most Valuable Player. He did not play club in 2024 and 2025 before playing for the Thunder in 2026, where he helped lead his team to a seventh-place finish in the Boys High School Rugby National Championships. A Cal Rugby Summer Camp attendee, Scully is a gifted student-athlete who plans to major in business or finance.
Scully is the son of Alexandra, an interior designer at Rustic Rooster Interiors, and Sean, a sales manager at Ferguson Enterprise and a former football player at Saint Mary's and Sacramento State. His uncle, Blaine, is a former Cal Rugby alumnus, All-American, national champion, and former USA Eagles captain.
"Joining Cal Rugby means everything to me," Scully said. "Cal is a huge part of our family. Growing up in Northern California, my uncle and dad both lived in NorCal their whole life and I hear nothing but the best about Cal Rugby. I love the sport of rugby and Cal is the most prestigious, hardworking, and desirable program that I want more than anything to be a part of."
Reese Reiter
William "Reese" Reiter III is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound wing/fullback who comes from Imperial Beach. The U.S. citizen graduated from Cathedral Catholic high school in San Diego along with fellow Bear commit Kingston Hawkins, where he was a part of the No. 1 ranked high school rugby team in 2025, and was a three time champion of the SCIRF Rugby League (2023-2025). Reiter missed the majority of his high school senior season with injury.
Reese played club rugby for the San Diego Mustangs and helped lead his team to the National Championship in 2025 and a runner-up finish this past season in 2026. The Mustangs also won the SoCal Rugby League in back-to-back seasons in 2025-26. The Cal Rugby Summer Camp attendee plans to major in business.
Reiter is the son of William, a University of Virginia Rugby Football Club alumnus, and Jennifer, a co-manager of Holistic Veterinarian Care. Reese is excited to follow in his grandparents' footsteps as both graduated from Cal in 1973 and 1974.
"Joining the Cal Rugby program means everything to me and my rugby journey," he said. "I'm extremely fortunate to have access to such amazing coaches and facilities to grow as a player and as an individual. Getting my education at Cal is something I'm looking forward to very much and working with great professors and students is something I'm very excited about."
Shelby Moyesfield
Shelby is a 6-foot-6 220-pound lock who comes from Los Angeles. The U.S. citizen attended Wiseburn Da Vinci, playing high school rugby for Villa Park and John Muir. Moyesfield won back-to-back SoCal Division 2 High School championship titles with Villa Park in 2026 and John Muir in 2025. He also started on the varsity basketball team at Da Vinci his junior year but opted not to play his senior season to focus on rugby.
Moyesfield played club rugby for Belmont Shore, helping lead them to the 2026 SCFRU Division 2 Championship. An honor roll and chemistry award recipient in high school, Moyesfield plans to major in environmental studies.
Moyesfield is the son of Heather, a principal cloud architect for Amazon Web Services. He enjoys photography, skateboarding, playing basketball, fishing and going to the beach in his free time.
"It means so much to me to attend Cal after putting in so much time and effort in both my rugby career and focusing on my academics," Moyesfield said. "From moving to New Zealand last year to being able to play at a high level and go to a very prestigious school, and now going to a top university feels like I'm continuing down that path."
Rowan Hester
Rowan is a 6-foot-6, 240-pound lock who comes from Danville. The U.S. citizen attended San Ramon Valley High School, and played club rugby for the Danville Oaks, where he was coached by Cal Athletics and U.S. Rugby Hall of Famer Kort Schubert. Schubert is a former Cal national champion, All-American, U.S. international, and professional for the Cardiff Blues. Hester also played football his junior year at San Ramon.
Hester captained the Oaks this past season and was a member of the Oaks leadership council the past two seasons. He was a co-captain for the California Grizzlies in 2024-26 and a two time Great Northwestern Challenge champion with the California Grizzlies in 2024-25. The four-time Cal Rugby Summer Camp attendee plays the piano, guitar and trumpet in his spare time. Hester plans to major in economics.
Hester is the son of Meghan, a primary security officer at Aptiv Corporation and Carl, a security engineer at Twitch Interactive.
"Being from the Bay and having an opportunity to pursue my academic and athletic career at Cal means the world to me," Hester said. "Ever since I've started playing rugby I've wanted to be a Golden Bear and compete at the highest level. I look forward to challenging myself academically, physically and socially, and growing in an environment like no other."
Kingston Hawkins
Kingston is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound center/fullback who comes from San Diego. The U.S. citizen played rugby at Cathedral Catholic high school with Reiter, where he was the Player of the Year in 2025 and 2026, and helped lead his team to the league championship in 2023-25. Hawkins excelled in the classroom, twice earning Golden Honor Roll recognition. He plans to major in economics.
Hawkins is the son of Matthew, a partner at Burton Foods, and Alisa, the owner of Nono Salon and Boutique. Hawkins' father played rugby for the USA Eagles from 2006-13, captaining the USA sevens team from 2009-10 and 2010-11. Following his playing career, Matthew coached the USA Eagles sevens team for one season from 2013-14.
"Coming to Cal means that all the work that I have put in has paid off to get me this amazing opportunity," Hawkins said. "Cal is a great program both academically and athletically, and it has been a dream of mine to play for Cal Rugby. I am looking forward to meeting the team, becoming a part of the brotherhood, and improving everyday."
Coltyn Dickerson
Coltyn is a 6-foot, 190-pound center/wing who comes from Coronado. The U.S. citizen attended Coronado High School. Dickerson helped lead Coronado to the SCIRF Division 2 Championship in his freshman year in 2023 and was awarded Best Back honors in 2025. This past season, Coltyn was awarded the Captain's Award, Best Back and Best Kicker Awards. Coltyn also played football his freshman and junior year at Coronado. He plans to major in interdisciplinary studies.
Dickerson played club rugby for the San Diego Mustangs along with Reiter and helped lead his team to the National Championship in 2025 and a runner-up finish in 2026. The Mustangs also won the SoCal Rugby League in back-to-back seasons in 2025-26.
Coltyn is the son of Beth, a teacher at Gompers Preparatory Academy, and Deryck, a Seal Team Three Command Master Chief and current Naval Special Warfare Commander for the United States Navy.
"I am unbelievably grateful to study at the prestigious University of California, Berkeley, but I am also excited to get to play rugby for the best team in the nation," Dickerson said. " I look forward to sharpening my skills and becoming a better rugby player and teammate."
Kaimani Keanaaina
Kaimani is a 6-foot, 190-pound center/wing who comes from Union City. The U.S. citizen attended Saint Francis High School in Mountain View and played for the Saint Francis Lancers. Kaimani was a two time NorCal First-Team All-League selection and was named the 2026 NorCal Back of the Year. He helped lead the Lancers to back-to-back state championships in 2025-2026. Kaimani also excelled in the classroom, earning a selection to the Dean's List honor roll all four years of high school. He plans to major in business/finance.
The two-time Cal Rugby Summer Camp attendee played club rugby for the San Mateo Wolverines. As a member of the Wolverines, he was a 2026 First-Team All-League selection and helped lead his team to the 2024 U16 North American Invitational 7's championship as well as a league championship in 2025-26.
Kaimani is the son of Keala, the Dean of Students and Director of Rugby at Bellarmine College Preparatory, and Iona, who works for Medi-Cal. His father, Keala, is a 2001 Cal football and rugby alum and played fullback for the San Jose SaberCats before a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns in the NFL.
Kaimani will be going on a 2-year LDS mission and will be attending Cal and playing for Cal Rugby at the conclusion of his mission.
"It is such a blessing and a once in a lifetime opportunity to play for Cal Rugby," he said. "I've grown up watching Cal Rugby thrive my whole life, showcasing their winning tradition. Cal Rugby is great at developing their players to not only become their best on the field but help them grow as men. The education at Cal is such a blessing as well, and I know that the education could further my career greatly. I am so blessed to be a part of this program."
OUT OF STATE
Giuseppe "Beppe" Boglione
Beppe is a 5-foot-11, 250-pound prop who comes from Alexandria, Virginia. The U.S. citizen attended Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C., playing for Gonzaga rugby. He helped lead his team to back-to-back single school national championships in 2023-24 and was named Forward of the Year in 2023 as well as team captain in 2025 and 2026. Beppe was selected to the USA U18 Tour to South America in 2025, and played club rugby for Young Glory.
Beppe also excelled in the classroom, earning the Gonzaga Packenham Award for the highest GPA in the school in math and sciences. He was an academic first honor roll selection, a member of National Honors Society, a Latin Exam awardee and a Gonzaga Presidential Scholar. He looks to continue his academic success at Cal, majoring in chemistry.
Beppe is the son of Jane Davis, the Director of Strategic Initiatives at the National Catholic Education Association, and Luciano, who has a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Leeds, UK, and currently works in the Solid State Electronics Division of the Boeing Company, where he has been involved in new programs and projects. Luciano has also published more than 45 articles in peer-reviewed publications and holds three patents.
"I am incredibly excited to attend a university as well-regarded as Cal," Beppe said. "To be able to play rugby at such a historic, strong program as well as study at a high level is truly incredible, and I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue to grow as a person and as a rugby player at Cal."
INTERNATIONAL
Angus Brown
Angus is a 5-foot-11, 215-pound center from Vancouver, British Columbia. The U.S. citizen attended St. George's School, playing rugby for the Saints along with fellow Bear commit Bohdan Morris. He was awarded the Best Defensive Player award on the junior varsity team in 2024 and Best Back on the first XV team in 2025-26. He helped lead his team to the Boys Rugby High School Provincial Championship in 2025 and a third place finish in 2026, also winning multiple academic awards. The Cal Rugby Summer Camp attendee plans to major in economics.
Brown was awarded the Freshman Sportsman of the Year award in 2022-23, awarded to the top student-athlete out of 150 students in the grade for displaying athletic commitment and excellence. He also won the Grade 11 Sportsman of the Year award in 2024-25 and the Thomas Roxburgh Alumni Award in 2024-25, awarded to a student who offers a high level of academic and athletic promise for success and contribution to the school. This season, Brown received the Ian Song Trophy Award, recognizing a student for his excellent sportsmanship and effort in rugby. Brown was also captain of the ski team (2024-26) and was also a four time team Boys Skiing High School provincial champion (2023-26) and individual champion in 2026. This past season, he was also named Most Valuable Skier.
Brown played club rugby for the UBCOB Ravens, where he helped lead his team to a Provincial Club Championship in 2023. He was a member of the Canadian West U18 national representative team on their Germany tour in 2025 along with Morris, which included a team victory over Germany's U18 team. Brown also captained the Canadian West U16 national representative team.
Brown is the son of Jamie, an investment banking managing director at Canaccord Genuity, and Christina, a member of the Board of Directors for the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs. His older brother, Sam, is the captain of the Claremont Colleges Rugby team and represented Canada in the U18 and U20 national programs before training with the Senior Men's Sevens National Team. His other brother, Matthew, is a member of the Boston College Rugby team and is an NCR All-Star.
"Joining Cal Rugby isn't just about playing at a high level, it's about stepping into a culture of excellence, accountability, and legacy," Brown said. "The opportunity to uphold Cal Rugby's legacy and decorated history excites me. At the same time, studying at University of California, Berkeley pushes that same standard academically. At Berkeley, I will be surrounded by driven, ambitious people, an environment rich for growth, not just as an athlete, but as a person. For me, it means chasing both sides seriously: developing my game at an elite level while also building a strong academic foundation."
Antonio Cortese
Antonio is a 5-foot-9, 178-pound wing/fullback who comes from London, UK. He attended King's College School Wimbledon, playing for the first XV when he was 16 years old as a sophomore. He was the top try scorer for the 2023-24 season and was named Player of the Year in 2026. His team made the championship and finished as runner-ups at the U15 National Cup in 2023. In 2024, the team won the Surrey Cup and made the semifinals of the All England Cup. In 2025-26, they were ranked as high as No. 12 nationally and finished the season with a 10-0-1 record.
Cortese played club rugby for Rosslyn Park. He was named the Most Valuable Player on the U18 team in 2026 and helped his team win the National Cup and finish as runner-ups in the Quin's Cup in 2025. Cortese also excelled in the classroom, winning the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge Gold Award. The two-time Cal Rugby Summer Camp attendee is currently undeclared but plans to major in chemistry. Cortese is the son of Michele, a managing director at Goldman Sachs.
"Joining Cal Rugby while studying at UC Berkeley means pushing myself at the highest level, both academically and athletically," Cortese said. "I am stepping into an environment with a history of excellence, where performance is expected every day. It is a chance for me to develop discipline, resilience and consistency, not just as a player but as a student. I will also be surrounding myself with driven people, which raises my own standards. For me, it's about making the most of that environment and contributing to it in the best way I can."
Hal Hersee
Hal is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound prop from London, UK, whom Cal will likely move to flanker. Hal attended Harrow School, playing for the Lions in 2024-26. He helped lead his team to the 2025 Daily Mail Championship, and three straight Continental Tyres Schools Cup Champions (2024-26). He played club rugby for the England Lambs U18 team and played cricket for the Harrow School "A" team as a junior, but did not play his senior year to focus on rugby. The Cal Rugby Summer Camp attendee plans to major in political economy.
Hal is the son of Mark, a private equity partner at BC Partners, and Katherine, a PhD student.
"I am incredibly honoured and excited to be a part of Cal Rugby," Hersee said. "I can think of no better way to grow as a player, athlete and person than being part of such a prestigious program. I am proud to have been given the opportunity and cannot wait to get started."
Bohdan Morris
Bohdan is a 6-foot-3, 230-pound backrower from Vancouver, British Columbia. He attended St. George's School, playing rugby for the Saints along with Brown. Morris helped lead his team to the 2025 High School Rugby Provincial Championship and a third-place finish in 2026. He played club rugby for Bayside RFC.
Bohdan was selected for the U14 Team B.C. in 2022, the U16 Team B.C. in 2023-2024, the U17 Team B.C. in 2025, the Canadian West U18 team tour to Germany in 2025 and the Canadian Selects U18 tour to Argentina in 2026. Morris was also the recipient of the Best Forward Award on the Canadian West U18 team during their Germany tour. His club team won the Club Provincial Championship in 2023-2024.
Bohdan will major in engineering and enjoys playing the saxophone in his free time. He is the son of Philip, a senior resource coordination officer for Natural Resource Management in the B.C. government.
"I am extremely honored and excited to be able to join a program like Cal Rugby," Morris said. "It gives me the best opportunity to develop as a rugby player at the highest level, while also getting an amazing education in engineering."
