Rogers Ends Season As All-American
Sophomore Long Jumper Places 10th At NCAA Outdoor Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – A mild and sunny day at Hayward Field heralded an exciting Day 1 of the NCAA Outdoor Championships as California track & field's
Trevor Rogers and
Seth Johnson competed in Eugene for the first time as collegians Wednesday, aiming to build off their standout 2026 seasons.
For Rogers, a dual-sport sophomore long jumper, the meet was just one of several athletic commitments he had made for the week, with the Golden Bears' football team waiting to welcome him back to practice in Berkeley the very next day. With old high school teammates in attendance, Rogers took full advantage of their presence, wearing a grin and calling out to them before each attempt while gesturing for the crowd to clap in time with his strides.
His first leap was a respectable 7.65m (25-1.25), his second-best mark of the year. The next jump saw him sail 7.70m (25-3.25), followed by a final mark of 7.73m (25-4.5) – good for 10th place and Second-Team All-America status.
"I am so proud of that kid," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Robyne Johnson, who coaches the horizontal jumpers. "He did everything he was supposed to do. Ranked 42nd in the region two weeks ago, makes it to Nationals, and posts three out of his four lifetime bests in a row? He's a competitor."
Johnson, a redshirt junior decathlete, started off his day with a solid time of 10.86 in the 100m and a mark of 6.80m (22-3.75) in the long jump before putting the shot 12.86m (42-2.25) for a new personal best. In the high jump, however, he elected to pass until the bar hit 1.92m (6-3.5) but just missed all three of his attempts at that height, ending his chances at recording a score for the event. Johnson regrouped and returned for the 400m three hours later, finishing with another PB of 48.45 for the fifth-best time in the field. He will look to carry that positive momentum into Thursday's competition, where he will compete in five more events – including his best, the 110m hurdles, which is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. PT.
In addition to Johnson, two more Bears will close out their collegiate seasons Thursday. Sophomore
Valentina Savva (the nation's No. 5 hammer thrower) will enter the ring in Flight 2 of the two-flight event, which is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., while Indoor All-American and school record-holder
Ali Sahaida will close out her collegiate career in the women's pole vault at 5:35 p.m.
