Golden Bears Finish Season At NCAA Outdoor Championships
EUGENE, Ore. – Three members of the California track & field team closed out the 2026 outdoor season for the Golden Bears on Thursday, with two joining sophomore teammate
Trevor Rogers (who competed in the long jump the day before) as All-Americans on a bright and warm day at Hayward Field.
The first of these was sophomore
Valentina Savva, who had to wait until the second flight of the hammer competition to enter the ring. Savva opened at 66.99m (219-9) before fouling her second attempt, then stoically launched the hammer 68.60m (225-1) to move into fifth place and book her spot in the final. Although she only passed 68 meters once more (68.51m/224-9 on her sixth throw) Savva's efforts were enough to place eighth to pick up a point for Cal and make the NCAA podium for the first time in her career as a First-Team All-American.
Feeling good enough to pass the opening bar of 4.09m (13-5), pole vaulter
Ali Sahaida entered the competition at 4.24m (13-11) and cleared that height with ease. All 17 remaining pole vaulters (Sahaida included) cleared the next bar at 4.39m (14-4.75), the Cal senior doing so on her second try; that mark ended up being her last make as she had two run-throughs before hitting the bar on her ascent at 4.49m (14-8.75). It was good enough to tie for 13th place and earn Second-Team All-America status, an additional accolade for her trophy case after finishing fifth for first-team status indoors.
Pushing through the disappointment of not recording a mark in the high jump on Day 1 (thus effectively ending his All-America hopes), redshirt junior
Seth Johnson elected to finish what he had started and compete in all five events on Day 2 to end his season. Although his day started off with another agonizing result as he clipped several hurdles before falling over the last one in the 100m hurdles, he rebounded with a personal best of 40.60m (133-2) in the discus throw as well as a matching 14th-place result of 4.41m (14-5.5) in the pole vault. Johnson struggled to find his form in the javelin but bounced back one more time for his 10th and final event, finishing the 1500m in 4:40.92 to bring his total to a 19th-place 6643.
