Former Oklahoma State assistant coach and UC Santa Barbara Associate Head Coach
Maggie Kane has been named The Stacy Savides Director of Women's Tennis, California Co-Directors of Athletics
Jay Larson and
Jenny Simon-O'Neill announced Thursday.
"We are thrilled to welcome Maggie to Berkeley as the newest member of the Cal family and the leader of the women's tennis program," Larson and Simon-O'Neill said. "Maggie is a rising star in the intercollegiate tennis community. She is a proven winner who cares deeply about the holistic development of student-athletes. She presented a clear vision for how she will lead the program, and we are excited for her to carry on the proud tradition of excellence on and off the courts for Cal women's tennis."
"I want to thank
Jay Larson,
Jenny Simon-O'Neill, Marissa Nichols (Senior Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator) and the entire search committee," Kane said. "I am incredibly excited that we all share a common vision for the future of Cal women's tennis. I am honored to join such a prestigious university with a rich tradition of excellence, both academically and athletically."
"Today, the focus may be on me, but tomorrow the focus returns to the young women and their journey toward becoming exceptional students, elite competitors and trusted teammates whom our University, our alumni and the entire Cal community can be proud of."
Kane is the first Cal women's tennis head coach to be named The Stacy Savides Director of Women's Tennis. She takes over for
Kris Kwinta, the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis who led the women's team on an interim basis last season.
Kane heads to Berkeley after a one-year stint as an assistant coach in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Previously, she was at UC Santa Barbara for four seasons (2022-25) as associate head coach. Kane was named the ITA Southwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2025, and she helped twice lead the Gauchos to the NCAA Championship round of 32, along with three conference championships. She worked with UCSB star Amelia Honer in 2024, when the latter reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Singles Championship.
Kane was a volunteer assistant coach at her alma mater, North Carolina, for two seasons (2020-21), helping the Tar Heels win back-to-back titles at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, capture their fifth consecutive ACC championship as they finished the season ranked No. 1 (2020) and posted a remarkable 48-0 winning streak to set an ACC record. Kane also coached Tar Heels Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty to an NCAA doubles championship in 2021. Kane began her coaching career as a volunteer assistant with Charleston Southern in 2018-19.
A four-year player with the Tar Heels and a team captain as a senior, Kane won two titles with her squad at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship (2015, '18) and three titles at the ACC Championship (2016-18). She was honored as UNC's Most Improved Player after her freshman and senior seasons. Also a standout in the classroom, Kane was a four-year member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll, garnered ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction as a senior and earned the 2017-18 Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award as the top academic performer on her team. She graduated from North Carolina in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts-Sports Administration in exercise and sports science.
The Raleigh, North Carolina, native joins a perennially strong Cal program that finished last season with a No. 22 ranking and 13-8 record after reaching the second round of the NCAA Championship and quarterfinals of the ACC Championship. Cal has competed in 43 NCAA team tournaments, produced seven NCAA individual champions (5 doubles, 2 singles), and coached 47 All-Americans, including
Berta Passola Folch, the NCAA Singles Championship runner-up last season, and rising senior
Mao Mushika, a doubles All-American in 2024-25.
What They're Saying About Maggie Kane
"I am very excited for Maggie. I have so much respect for the Cal program and what they were able to do under Amanda Augustus and Jan Brogan before her. Maggie is very well-prepared for this incredible opportunity. I have 34 years of coaching experience on the women's side and have been around really good players and people, and Maggie is one of the best. She was patient and did the right things in her coaching career, and now gets this wonderful opportunity at Cal. She's at a great institution and athletic program, and I am excited to coach against her in the ACC."
- Brian Kalbas, North Carolina Head Coach
"Maggie is one of the top young coaching talents in the country and one of the hardest-working assistant coaches I've had the privilege to work with. She played a major role in helping elevate our UCSB program in the national scene and was involved in every aspect of our success."
- Simon Thibodeau, UC Santa Barbara Head Coach
"Cal will do amazing things with Maggie! She is an awesome person and coach. She really helped me reach my potential in my last year, which led me to win a doubles national championship. It was really cool to share that moment with her. She is so devoted to what she does as a coach and she was a great captain for us on the team. I really respected her for the way she led us while she was our teammate and for the way she led us when she was our volunteer assistant coach. I know she'll do great things at Cal, and I'll definitely be following along. I'm super pumped for her. Go Bears!"
- Makenna Jones, Former North Carolina NCAA doubles champion
"Maggie is probably one of the most genuine people that I've met on and off the tennis court. I know how much she cares about being a coach and how much she cares about her players. She won't just tell you want you want to hear but will tell you what you need to know to get better. How much she cares is why she's so special as a coach and as a person. In 2024, she worked with me the entire year and was on court with me every single match of the NCAA Singles Championship. That was a very big moment for me and UCSB, and Maggie had a lot to do with that."
- Amelia Honer, Former UC Santa Barbara All-American
