SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The No. 8 ranked California women’s swim team (10-0) and the No. 14 ranked California men’s swim team (2-1) both defeated Arizona State Friday at the Koret Recreation Center on the University of San Francisco campus. Cal swims its home meets at USF due to the construction of Haas Pavilion on the Cal campus.
The Golden Bear women remained undefeated on the season by dominating the Sun Devils, 192-109, while the Cal men squeaked by Arizona State, 124-122.
The Cal women won 12-of-14 of the meet’s swimming events. Among those performing well for the Bears were junior Marylyn Chiang (The Pas, Winnipeg, Canada). and sophomore Elli Overton (Sydney, Australia). Both Chiang and Overton were triple winners; with Chiang capturing the 100 back (55.44), 100 free (50.76) and 100 fly (54.98); and Overton winning the 200 free (1.50.16), 500 free (4:53.01) and 200 IM (2:03.82). Freshman Hanna Jaltner (Vaxjo, Sweden) also had a fine meet winning the 100 breast (1:03.73) and 200 breast (2:19.01).
Other individual winners for Cal were freshman Haley Cope (Chico, CA) in the 50 free (23.72) and sophomore Waen Minpraphal (Bangkok, Thailand) in the 200 fly (season-best 2:01.11). The Bears also won the 200 medley relay (1:45.81 Cope, Brelsford, Chiang, Omphroy) and 200 free relay (1:37.38 Lowes, Kolbisen, Mattos, Omphroy). Another highlight for Cal was senior diver Danielle Duris (Sacramento, CA), who placed second in the one-meter competition, qualified for the Zone E Championships by tallying a score of 256.425.
The Cal men won seven-of-11 of the swimming events and were led by senior Bart Sikora (Gdynia, Poland) and junior Gordon Kozulj (Zagreb, Croatia), who won two events apiece. Sikora placed first in the 200 free (1:40.21) and 200 back (1:45.54), while Kozulj topped the field in the 200 IM (1:51.04) and 200 fly (1:50.27). Sophomore Bart Kizierowski (Warsaw, Poland) also was a highlight by winning the 100 free with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 43.73, and sophomore Ratapong Sirisanont (Bangkok, Thailand) won the 200 breast (2:00.72).
Matt Carter won two events for the Arizona State men, winning the 1000 free (9:19.70) and 500 free (4:33.93).
The Cal women will next travel to Los Angeles to face USC on Friday, Jan. 30 and UCLA Saturday, Jan. 31. The Bear men next travel to Pacific, Wed. Jan. 28.
