Cal Opens 199 Season with a Bang

Men's gymnastics to host home opener this weekend.

Bears place first in every event and sweep rings and parallel bars to dominate Stanford meet

CAL HOSTS HOME OPENER: The California's men's gymnastics team will host a three-squad meet at the Recreational Sports Facility on the Cal campus this Friday, February 6 at 7:30 p.m. The Bears will battle the eighth-ranked Stanford Cardinal and the UCSB Gaunchos in a repeat of last week's meet at Stanford. The Bears have not lost at home since 1995 and will look to extend their current winning streak to 25 contests.

LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION HIGHLIGHTS: Cal thoroughly dominated Stanford and UCSB last Friday at Stanford. The Bears won every event and swept the rings and p-bars competitions to finish with a convincing first place 229.600 point total...eight Cal gymnasts placed in at least one of the seven events...Oleg Kosiak (57.9) and Evgenii Kherebchevskiy (57.25) came in first and second place respectively in the all-around competition...Kosiak took first place on the floor with a career-high 9.850, the p-bars (9.70) and tied for top honors with teammate Jeff Stein on the bars (9.8)..Kosiak finished in the top three places in every event...Zherebchevskiy won the rings competition with a score of 9.750, placed second on the p-bars (9.650) and tied for second with fellow Bear Alex Chanski on the h-bar...Zherebchevskiy also took third on the floor (9.5) and joined Stanford's Jason Katsampes and Cal's Tal Moscowitz at third place on the horse with a 9.5 score.

ABOUT THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: The eighth-ranked Stanford will be looking to redeem itself after a thrashing by Cal last week...Jason Katsampes was the sole Cardinal to place in the top three in any of the events. He came in third place in the all-around (56.6) and h-bar (9.55) and tied for third on the horse (9.5). He took second on the floor (9.6) and tied for second with Cal's Josh Birkelbaw on the vault (9.5)...,The Cardinal lost junior Scott Finkelstein to injury...UCSB is 0-2 after losing to Cal and Stanford last week...Seniors Paul Mendoza and Dusty Hyland hold the Gaunchos 1998 team highs in five of the seven events...the Gaunchos are weak on the h-bar where no team member has scored above 8.85 (Josh Nelson) this season.
