Bear Men Golfers Fire School Record 22-Under Par to Lead First Round
Berkowitz Leads Way with Cal-Record 8-Under-Par 64
Feb. 5, 1998
MONTERREY, Mexico- A red-hot California men's golf team combined to shot a school-record 22-under-par 266 on Thursday to lead a twenty-team field after the first round of play at the International Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at Club Campestre in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Golden Bears lead second place Baylor (15-under 273) by seven strokes. Southern Methodist (13-under 275), Brigham Young (12-under 276), and North Texas (10-under 278) round out the team top five.
The Bears were lead to their record-setting performance by junior team captain Jay Berkowitz, who set a new Cal individual record for 18 holes with an sizzling eight-under-par opening round of 64 to lead all golfers. In striking distance only three shots off the pace set by Berkowitz are Cal's Han Lee and Dan Arroyo who also had outstanding days on the links for the Bears, firing five-under-par 67s to finish the opening round tied for fourth place overall. Cal freshman Adam Ainbinder, playing in only his second collegiate golf tournament ever, ended today's play just four strokes out at four-under 68 to finish in a three-way tie for 12th.
"I've been doing this a long time and I've never seen anything like it," said Cal head coach Steve Desimone who is in his 19th year at the helm of the Golden Bears golf program. "Not only did we break the old school record we smashed it."
Cal's non-scoring round was supplied by junior Dan Coyle who shot a solid even-par round of 72 and finished the first day of competition tied for 51st.
The Bears will try to hold their lead tomorrow when the second round of play at the International Intercollegiate continues. Tee times are set for 7:30 a.m., CST, and results will be made available as soon as play is completed. The tournament will conclude with the third and final round on Saturday, Feb. 7.
