Center Solomon Hughes signs letter of intent with Cal.
May 11, 1998
Solomon Hughes, a 6-11, 225-pound center from Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia, has signed a letter on intent to play basketball at Cal, head coach Ben Braun announced today.
Originally from California, Hughes played at Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance before moving to Fork Union this past season. Regarded one of the Top 40 prospects in the country, Hughes chose Cal after also visiting Florida and Florida State.
"I'm excited about Solomon's decision to come to Cal," Braun said. "He is an agile post player who has outstanding potential, and there is a tremendous opportunity for him to make an immediate contribution here. Solomon is also a strong student who has very high academic goals. He is a great fit for our program."
While at Bishop Montgomery, Hughes averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds per game as a senior in 1996-97. He then signed a letter of intent to attend Tulane, but changed his mind and elected to enroll at Fork Union for a year of post-graduate work in 1997-98. After Tulane released him from the letter over the winter, Hughes was able to sign with Cal.
Hughes, who will enter Cal as a freshman, used his extra year in the prep ranks to add almost 35 pounds to his frame. He entered high school at just 6-2, but grew to 6-11 four years later.
Hughes is the third player to sign a letter of intent with Cal, joining 6-4 guard Dennis Gates from Whitney Young High School in Chicago and 6-5 swingman Carl Boyd from Porterville College in California. Cal still has two scholarships available to be filled before the end of the spring recruiting period.
