A Quick Look at the Golden Bears
After splitting its two games at UCLA and USC last weekend, Cal returns home to the Oakland Arena where the Bears are 8-1 this season. The Bears start their homestand with a Washington team that is coming off a Sweet 16 appearance in the 1998 NCAA Tournament before they host Washington State.
After falling into a slump through their first four Pac-10 games, where they started just 1-3, shot only 37.9 percent from the floor and averaged 61.5 ppg, the Bears exploded for 89 points in their win over USC Saturday - the most points for Cal in a conference road game since the Bears beat UCLA, 100-93, on Jan. 28, 1995 in Pauley Pavilion.
In the win over USC, Cal had five players score at least 15 points - topped by Geno Carlisle's 20 points and career-best 10 assists - and started a new lineup featuring a pair of freshmen in center Solomon Hughes and guard Dennis Gates. Hughes replaced senior Francisco Elson, who was held out after suffering a concussion at UCLA two nights earlier, while Gates subbed for the previously struggling Carlisle, who had been shooting just 27.6 percent from the floor in Pac-10 action.
Over the last seven games, Cal has received strong play from senior guard Thomas Kilgore. Averaging just 9.7 ppg on 34 percent shooting prior to title game of the Golden Bear Classic Dec. 22, Kilgore has averaged 16.0 ppg since and has made almost 54 percent of his shots. He matched his career high of 21 points against both North Carolina and Stanford and also led the Bears in scoring vs. SW Louisiana (16 points) and Oregon (17).
Up front, the Bears boast one of the nation's top rebounders in sophomore Sean Lampley. Now averaging 12.6 ppg and 9.9 rpg, Lampley has already posted six double-doubles, including a 21-point, 18-board performance vs. Houston. The MVP of the Golden Bear Classic, he has paced Cal on the boards in 12 of the 14 games he has played. Lampley is trying to become the first Cal player to average at least 10 rebounds for a full season since Brian Hendrick (10.7 rpg) did in 1991-92.
Defense continues to be the strength of the team as the Bears are limiting opponents to 40.1% field goal shooting and to 27.4% from three-point range. Cal is forcing 20.40 turnovers per contest, while only committing 14.53 per game themselves, for a Pac-10 leading +5.87 margin.
Cal on the Radio
All California games will be broadcast on KABL Radio (960 AM) in San Francisco and KATD Radio (990 AM) in Concord with Roxy Bernstein calling the action. Each broadcast begins 20 minutes prior to tip-off with the Cal Basketball Pregame Show. After the game, head coach Ben Braun will recap the action on the Cal Basketball Postgame Show. In addition to the radio, broadcasts can be heard on the Internet at www.broadcast.com.
Cal Radio on Telephone
All Cal basketball radio broadcasts during the 1998-99 season are available nationwide via telephone through TRZ Telephone Broadcast Services. Fans may access the Cal games from anywhere in the country by dialing 800-846-4700, extension 5918. The cost is 50 cents for the first minute, with decreasing rates for each addition minute.
The Oakland Arena
While Haas Pavilion is under construction on campus, Cal will play all of its home games at the Oakland Arena. Recently renovated and expanded to 19,200 seats, the facility also serves as host to the NBA's Golden State Warriors. Cal played its first game in Oakland in 1974 and has an all-time mark of 34-19 there. The building, which was originally built in 1966, served as host of the men's NCAA West Regionals in 1990 and '95 and the women's regionals in 1998.
Cal Coach Ben Braun
Ben Braun (Wisconsin '75), who was named the 14th head coach in Cal history on Sept. 15, 1996, is in his third year in Berkeley and 22nd season as collegiate head coach. He agreed to a new eight-year contract with Cal in October 1997 that extends through the 2004-05 season. His record at Cal stands at 46-28, while his career mark, which includes 11 years at Eastern Michigan and eight seasons at Siena Heights College, is 379-263. The 1997 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and a finalist for '97 National Coach of the Year honors, Braun led the Bears to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1997. At EMU from 1985-96, the three-time MAC Coach of the Year guided the Eagles to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT appearance with an overall record of 185-132. A native of Chicago, Braun played one year of basketball at Wisconsin-LaCrosse before transferring to Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a teaching degree in English with a minor in African-American studies in 1975. He received his master's degree in guidance and counseling from Siena Heights.

Golden Bear Notes
Carlisle Comes Off Bench to Lead Cal over USC
Senior guard Geno Carlisle came off the bench for the first time in 28 games to score 20 points and dish out a career-high 10 assists to lead Cal to an 89-75 victory over USC last Saturday in Los Angeles. The Bears trailed, 32-29, with just over a minute left in the first half when a Carl Boyd steal and layup sparked a 6-0 run to give Cal a 35-32 lead at the break. In the second half, the Bears shot 56.7 percent from the field and were up by as many as 20 points. Boyd finished with a career-best 17 points, while Mike Gill had a season-high 17 points and Sean Lampley posted his sixth double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Bears Equal '97-98 Road Win Total
With its 89-75 victory over USC at the Los Angeles Sports Arena last Saturday, Cal picked up its third road win of the year, matching the Bears total for all of last season. So far this year, Cal has won at Hawaii (71-60) and BYU (71-70) as well, and has a 3-3 road mark. Two of the losses have been against Top 10 teams - Stanford and UCLA - with the other setback at DePaul (75-72). In 1997-98, the Bears were just 3-10 away from home, winning only at Oregon State, Washington State and USC.
Some Bears Get Well, Others Hurt in Los Angeles
Cal's trip to Los Angeles last weekend provided mixed results on several fronts for the Bears. On the up side, Cal ended a two-game losing streak with an 89-75 victory over USC Saturday. In that game, five Bears scored at least 15 points, led by junior swingman Carl Boyd's career-high 17 points (8-12 FG, 1-2 FT) and senior forward Mike Gill's season-best 17 points (6-14 FG, 1-3 3P, 4-4 FT). In addition, sophomore forward Sean Lampley came off the bench for his first double-double since Dec. 21 with 15 points and 11 boards, while senior guard Geno Carlisle, although he did not start for the first time this season, finished with 20 points and a career-high 10 assists. However, the news was not all good as a couple of players suffered injuries. Senior center Francisco Elson sustained a concussion at UCLA last Thursday and missed the first game of his career at USC. Freshman guard Dennis Gates missed the final 28 minutes of the USC contest when he hurt his back taking a charge against Trojan center Brian Scalabrine. The status of both players will be determined later this week.
Kilgore Picks Up Pace
Senior guard Thomas Kilgore, who was shooting just 32.7 percent from the field through the season's first six games, has watched his production rise dramatically the last seven games. Kilgore started Cal's first six contests and averaged 9.7 ppg. However, he missed the team bus to the airport for the BYU game and was held out of the Eastern Kentucky game as well. Since then, Kilgore has become much more of a contributor. Over his last seven games, Kilgore has reached double figures every time, averaging 16.0 ppg and shooting 53.7 percent from the floor. Twice during that stretch he has tied his career high with 21 points - first against North Carolina, then at Stanford. Kilgore also set a personal best with eight rebounds against the Cardinal. In addition, he led the Bears with 16 points against SW Louisiana and 17 points versus Oregon.

Carlisle Nears 1,500 Career Points
After his sixth 20-point game of the season at USC last week, senior guard Geno Carlisle edged ever closer to the 1,500-point level. Carlisle, who has 663 points in two seasons at Cal, scored 836 points during the first two years of his college career at Northwestern. Carlisle enters Thursday's game against Washington with 1,499 points. Carlisle's backcourt teammate Thomas Kilgore scored his 1,000th career point at UCLA last Thursday. After his 15-point outing at USC, Kilgore has 1,017 points in his career, including 441 points at Cal. He scored 576 points in two seasons at Central Michigan before transferring to Berkeley.

Carlisle Lighting Up Scoreboard for Bears
Senior guard Geno Carlisle, who has switched from shooting guard to point guard this season, has not let the move affect his scoring ability. After leading Cal with 17.9 ppg last year, Carlisle is averaging 17.9 ppg this season. He has already tallied at least 25 points five times, including three times on the road: 26 at Hawaii, 25 at DePaul and 27 at BYU. In addition, he had 26 points in Cal's win over Rhode Island and a season-high 29 points in the win over North Carolina Dec. 29 (also Carlisle's high in a home game during his Cal career). In addition to his scoring, Carlisle leads Cal in assists with 61 (4.1 per game). He dished out a career-best 10 assists at USC Jan. 16 - the most for a Cal player since Prentice McGruder also had 10 assists against Arizona State on March 6, 1997. Carlisle has had at least five assists in a game five times this year.
Carlisle Coming Up Big in Clutch
Geno Carlisle not only leads Cal in scoring, but he also has demonstrated a knack for coming up big in clutch situations. Nowhere was that more evident than in Cal's 78-71 win over North Carolina when Carlisle scored 10 of his 29 points in the final five minutes to bring the Bears back from a 10-point deficit. He also had nine of his 26 points in the last five minutes against Rhode Island and eight points (out of 27 total) in the final five minutes in a 71-70 victory at BYU.
Cal Earns First AP Ranking in 2 Years
When Cal earned enough votes to hold down the 25th spot in the Jan. 4 Associated Press poll, it marked the Bears first AP ranking since they were 25th in the Feb. 17, 1997 ratings. Cal was 18th in the final USA Today/ESPN poll that came out after the 1997 NCAA Tournament in which the Bears reached the Sweet 16. After Cal's loss at No. 4 Stanford last Saturday, the Bears are 26th in this week's AP poll.
Lampley Aims for Double-Double Average
Prior to the season, sophomore forward Sean Lampley set a goal for himself that he would average a double-double for the entire season. And so far, Lampley is not far off from his aim. Lampley enters the Washington game averaging 12.6 ppg and 9.9 rpg and is trying to become the first Cal player to average at least 10 rebounds since Brian Hendrick in 1991-92 (10.7 rpg). Lampley, who missed Cal's opener at Hawaii while recuperating from a partially torn ligament in his right hand, had 10 boards in his first game back against Eastern Washington. He then grabbed 14 rebounds at DePaul and a career-high 18 boards (to go with a career-high-tying 21 points) vs. Houston. For the season, Lampley has led Cal on the glass 12 times in the 14 games he has played. He enters this week ranked third in the Pac-10 in rebound average.
Freshmen Get First Starts at USC
Through the season's first 14 games, Cal started at least four seniors nine times. But the Bears got a lot younger in their game at USC Jan. 16. In that contest, head coach Ben Braun started a pair of freshmen - center Solomon Hughes and guard Dennis Gates. Hughes was spelling Francisco Elson, who was held out of the contest after suffering a concussion at UCLA two nights earlier. He responded with five points, four rebounds and two blocks in 17 minutes. Gates started in place of a slumping Geno Carlisle. However, Gates played only five minutes after injuring his back while taking a charge. Carlisle seemed to respond to not starting by finishing with 20 points and 10 assists.

Second Half Surges the Norm for Cal
So far this season, Cal has scored at least as many points in the second half as in the first half in every game. The Bears are averaging 33.9 points over the first 20 minutes, but raise that rate to 40.2 points after intermission. Cal's highest first half outputs came against Eastern Washington and versus Southwestern Louisiana when the Bears scored 46 points. However, they topped that with 48 points in the second half in both contests. The biggest differential came at UCLA when the Bears scored 19 points in the first half and 42 in the second. Cal also was +19 at USC two days later.

Cal Turning Up the Turnovers
With 306 turnovers forced in its 15 games, Cal is coaxing opponents into an average of 20.40 turnovers per game, exactly 2.0 more per game than in any other season since statistics started being kept during the 1978-79 season. The school record for average turnovers forced came during Jason Kidd's freshman year in 1992-93 when the Bears forced 18.40 turnovers per game. Cal has had a positive turnover margin in all but two games (15-14 at DePaul, 21-20 at UCLA) and has posted a double-digit margin four times: +17 vs. North Carolina, +12 vs. Eastern Kentucky, +11 vs. Eastern Washington and +11 vs. Oregon State. Below is a look at the Top 5 seasons in terms of turnovers forced per game.

Freshman Guard Donte Smith Gains Eligibility
Donte Smith, a 6-2 point guard who was the 1998 Washington, D.C., Player of the Year, has been granted his eligibility by the NCAA. Smith will be enrolled at Cal for the spring semester. However, Smith and head coach Ben Braun have discussed the probability of Smith redshirting this season, meaning he will have four full years to play beginning next season. Smith was an honors student at Anacostia HS where he averaged 28.3 ppg and 6.2 apg and was rated the No. 52 recruit in the country by Bob Gibbons' All-Star Sports as a senior. He fell just short of qualifying on his standardized tests, and Cal made an appeal on his behalf.
Haas Pavilion to Open for '98-99 Season
Cal will open the 1998-99 season in a new on-campus arena - the Walter A. Haas Jr. Pavilion. The facility, which is being built on the site of the former Harmon Gym, will have a capacity of 12,300 - up from 6,578 in Harmon - and is named in honor of Walter and Evelyn Haas, who donated a lead gift of $10 million. Construction on the $57 million project got underway in the summer of 1997. The Bears played in Harmon Gym for 64 seasons (1933-97) and compiled a 588-300 record there. The final game at the facility came on March 6, 1997 when Cal defeated Arizona State, 84-66.
