A Quick Look at the Golden Bears
After evening its Pac-10 home record at 2-2 with a 75-68 victory over Washington State Saturday, California makes its annual trip to Arizona this week, starting with a visit to Arizona State Thursday.

The Bears have been a much better team on the road this season compared to last year as they are 3-3 away from home in 1998-99 vs. going just 3-10 on the road in '97-98. This season, the wins have come at Hawaii, BYU and USC, while two of the losses have been to Top 10 teams Stanford and UCLA.

But this week, Cal faces a pair of schools that have been particularly tough on the Bears on their home courts. Arizona State has won eight consecutive games over the Bears in Tempe, with Cal last winning, 68-66, in double overtime in 1990. The Bears have actually had more success at Arizona during that span, coming out of McKale Center with victories over the Wildcats in both 1994 and '95. Although Arizona has emerged with a win the last three times in Tucson, the games have been decided by a total of seven points, including a 76-73 decision last year.

Over the last month, the most consistent individual for the Bears has been senior guard Thomas Kilgore. Averaging just 9.4 ppg on 34 percent shooting through the first six games, he has averaged 16.2 ppg and shot almost 54 percent from the floor since. Kilgore tied a Cal career high with 21 points in the win over North Carolina and also totaled 21 points at Stanford. In addition, he has led the team in scoring three other times during that stretch with 16 points against SW Louisiana, 17 points vs. Oregon and 19 points against Washington.

On the defensive end, Kilgore has had four steals in a game five times, including in last Thursday's games against the Huskies. For the season, he is averaging 2.07 per game.

Overall, senior guard Geno Carlisle still leads the team with 16.9 ppg, with a high of 29 points against North Carolina. He also paces the squad with 70 assists for an average of 4.1 per game.

Up front, the Bears boast one of the nation's top rebounders in sophomore Sean Lampley. Now averaging 12.2 ppg and 9.6 rpg, Lampley has posted six double-doubles, including a 21-point, 18-board performance vs. Houston. He has paced Cal on the boards in 13 of the 16 games he has played. Lampley is trying to become the first Cal player to average at least 10 rebounds for a full season since Brian Hendrick (10.7 rpg) did in 1991-92.

The Oakland Arena
While Haas Pavilion is under construction on campus, Cal will play all of its home games at the Oakland Arena. Recently renovated and expanded to 19,200 seats, the facility also serves as host to the NBA's Golden State Warriors. Cal played its first game in Oakland in 1974 and has an all-time mark of 35-20 there. The building, which was originally built in 1966, served as host of the men's NCAA West Regionals in 1990 and '95 and the women's regionals in 1998.

Cal Coach Ben Braun Ben Braun (Wisconsin '75), who was named the 14th head coach in Cal history on Sept. 15, 1996, is in his third year in Berkeley and 22nd season as collegiate head coach. He agreed to a new eight-year contract with Cal in October 1997 that extends through the 2004-05 season. His record at Cal stands at 47-29, while his career mark, which includes 11 years at Eastern Michigan and eight seasons at Siena Heights College, is 380-264. The 1997 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and a finalist for '97 National Coach of the Year honors, Braun led the Bears to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1997. At EMU from 1985-96, the three-time MAC Coach of the Year guided the Eagles to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT appearance with an overall record of 185-132. A native of Chicago, Braun played one year of basketball at Wisconsin-LaCrosse before transferring to Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a teaching degree in English with a minor in African-American studies in 1975. He received his master's degree in guidance and counseling from Siena Heights.

Arizona State Scouting Report

A Look at Arizona State (11-8, 3-4)
Arizona State is coming off a 64-60 victory at Oregon Saturday. The Sun Devils received more than half their points (34) from guard Eddie House. For the season, House is averaging 20.0 ppg and has made 47-of-113 three-pointers (41.6%). Forward Mike Batiste, who was not eligible to play the first eight games of the year, has averaged 16.1 ppg since his return.

Cal-Arizona State Series History
Arizona State holds a 26-19 series lead over Cal in a series that dates back to the 1955-56 season. The teams have split their yearly series seven of the last eight years. The only time a visiting team won on the opponent's court came in 1995 when ASU defeated Cal, 73-68, at the Oakland Arena. Last year, the Devils won, 99-80, in Tempe, while the Bears came out on top, 82-77, in Oakland.

Arizona State Head Coach Rob Evans
Rob Evans is in his first season at Arizona State after leading Mississippi to an 86-81 record. In six seasons in Oxford, Miss., Evans guided the Rebels to a pair of SEC West titles and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. He was the 1997 SEC Coach of the Year.

Golden Bear Notes

Bench Support Lifts Cal Past Washington St., 75-68
Reserves Robbie Jones, Raymond King and Shahar Gordon provided the spark during a 14-4 run at the end of the first half as California beat Washington State, 75-68, last Saturday at the Oakland Arena. Jones, seeing his first action in more than a month, had four points and four rebounds in 15 minutes, while King played 19 minutes and finished with four points and three assists. Gordon made the most of his four minutes with two points, a rebound, an assist, a block and a steal. For the game, Sean Lampley and Thomas Kilgore tied for team honors with 15 points each.

Bears Out to Break ASU Streak
When Cal takes to the court at Arizona State Thursday night, the Bears will be out to break an eight-game losing streak to the Sun Devils in Tempe - Cal's longest current losing streak on a Pac-10 opponent's home floor. During the streak, the Bears have nearly pulled out a victory several times, losing by four points or less on four occasions. Twice, though, the margin has been 19 points with ASU winning 100-81 in 1995 and 99-80 last year. In fact, Cal's last victory in Tempe proved to be quite a struggle as the Bears prevailed 68-66 in double overtime on Jan. 25, 1990.

Carlisle Passes 1,500 Career Points
Although he scored just nine points (4-19 FG) against Washington last week, it was enough for Geno Carlisle to reach a personal milestone as he passed the 1,500-point mark for his career. Carlisle, who now has 682 points in two seasons at Cal, scored 836 points during the first two years of his college career at Northwestern. Carlisle enters Thursday's game at Arizona State with 1,518 points. Carlisle's backcourt teammate Thomas Kilgore scored his 1,000th career point at UCLA Jan. 14. After his 15-point outing vs. Washington State, Kilgore has 1,051 points in his career, including 475 points at Cal. He scored 576 points in two seasons at Central Michigan before transferring to Berkeley in January 1997.

Kilgore Picks Up Pace
Senior guard Thomas Kilgore, who was shooting just 32.7 percent from the field through the season's first six games, has watched his production rise dramatically the last seven games. Kilgore started Cal's first six contests and averaged 9.7 ppg. However, he missed the team bus to the airport for the BYU game and was held out of the Eastern Kentucky game as well. Since then, Kilgore has become much more of a contributor. Over his last nine games, Kilgore has reached double figures every time, averaging 16.2 ppg and shooting 54.7 percent from the floor. Twice during that stretch he has tied his career high with 21 points - first against North Carolina, then at Stanford. Kilgore also set a personal best with eight rebounds against the Cardinal. In addition, he led the Bears with 16 points against SW Louisiana, 17 points versus Oregon and 19 points against Washington and tied for team honors with 15 points versus Washington State.

Bears Equal '97-98 Road Win Total
With its 89-75 victory over USC at the Los Angeles Sports Arena Jan. 16, Cal picked up its third road win of the year, matching the Bears total for all of last season. So far this year, Cal has won at Hawaii (71-60) and BYU (71-70) as well, and has a 3-3 road mark. Two of the losses have been against Top 10 teams - Stanford and UCLA - with the other setback at DePaul (75-72). In 1997-98, the Bears were just 3-10 away from home, winning only at Oregon State, Washington State and USC.

Carlisle Coming Up Big in Clutch
Geno Carlisle not only leads Cal in scoring, but he also has demonstrated a knack for coming up big in clutch situations. Nowhere was that more evident than in Cal's 78-71 win over North Carolina when Carlisle scored 10 of his 29 points in the final five minutes to bring the Bears back from a 10-point deficit. He also had nine of his 26 points in the last five minutes against Rhode Island and eight points (out of 27 total) in the final five minutes in a 71-70 victory at BYU.

Lampley Aims for Double-Double Average
Prior to the season, sophomore forward Sean Lampley set a goal for himself that he would average a double-double for the entire season. And so far, Lampley is not far off from his aim. Lampley enters the Arizona State game averaging 12.2 ppg and 9.6 rpg and is trying to become the first Cal player to average at least 10 rebounds since Brian Hendrick in 1991-92 (10.7 rpg). Lampley, who missed Cal's opener at Hawaii while recuperating from a partially torn ligament in his right hand, had 10 boards in his first game back against Eastern Washington. He then grabbed 14 rebounds at DePaul and a career-high 18 boards (to go with a career-high-tying 21 points) vs. Houston. For the season, Lampley has led Cal on the glass 13 times in the 16 games he has played. He enters the ASU game ranked second in the Pac-10 in rebound average.

Second Half Surges the Norm for Cal
When looking at the statistics, it's easy to see why Cal could be called a second half team. The Bears have scored more points in the second half 14 times in 17 games and have a higher point total in the first half just one time (vs. Washington State). The Bears are averaging 34.3 points over the first 20 minutes, but raise that rate to 39.8 points after intermission. Cal's highest first half outputs came against Eastern Washington and versus Southwestern Louisiana when the Bears scored 46 points. However, they topped that with 48 points in the second half in both contests. The biggest differential came at UCLA when the Bears scored 19 points in the first half and 42 in the second. Cal also was +19 at USC two days later.

Cal Turning Up the Turnovers
With 348 turnovers forced in its 17 games, Cal is coaxing opponents into an average of 20.47 turnovers per game, more than 2.0 more per game than in any other season since statistics started being kept during the 1978-79 season. The school record for average turnovers forced came during Jason Kidd's freshman year in 1992-93 when the Bears forced 18.40 turnovers per game. Cal has had a positive turnover margin in all but two games (15-14 at DePaul, 21-20 at UCLA) and has posted a double-digit margin four times: +17 vs. North Carolina, +12 vs. Eastern Kentucky, +11 vs. Eastern Washington and +11 vs. Oregon State. Below is a look at the Top 5 seasons in terms of turnovers forced per game.

      Turnovers
Year Games Forced Avg.
1998-99 17 348 20.47
1992-93 30 552 18.40
1997-98 27 495 18.33
1979-80 27 489 18.11
1996-97 32 579 18.09
More Positives from Turnovers
In addition to forcing more than 20 turnovers per game, the Bears are committing just 14.65 per game themselves. As a result, Cal holds a substantial lead in the Pac-10 in turnover margin at +5.82 (UCLA is second at +2.56). The Bears are 9-1 when their turnover margin is +5 or greater and have committed 13 or fewer turnovers in a game eight times. Twice, Cal has had less than 10 turnovers in a game with seven vs. North Carolina and nine against Oregon State.

Carlisle's Scoring Is Down, But Assists Are Up
Since the start of Pac-10 play, Geno Carlisle has been in a prolonged shooting slump, making just 28.3 percent of his attempts from the field and averaging only 13.1 ppg. But the senior guard has made his mark by getting more of his teammates involved in the offense. Through seven conference games, Carlisle has 34 assists (4.9 apg) and a better than 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (34-16). He dished out a career-high 10 assists (2 turnovers at USC) and had six assists at UCLA. For the year, Carlisle has had at least five assists in a game seven times.

Gill Quietly Putting Up Big Numbers
Mike Gill may not get as much recognition as some of his teammates, but the senior forward is quietly having a solid season for the Bears. He began the year with his first career double-double - a 14-point, 10-rebound effort at Hawaii. Gill has scored at least 10 points five times in his last six games and has averaged 12.8 ppg over his past four contests. Gill's best outing came in Cal's win at USC when he totaled a season-high 17 points. After missing eight games last year with an abdominal injury and an infected tooth, Gill has come back to start 16 of 17 games this season.

Freshman Guard Donte Smith Gains Eligibility
Donte Smith, a 6-2 point guard who was the 1998 Washington, D.C., Player of the Year, has been granted his eligibility by the NCAA. Smith will be enrolled at Cal for the spring semester. However, head coach Ben Braun said Smith will likely redshirt this season, meaning he will have four full years to play beginning next season. Smith was an honors student at Anacostia HS where he averaged 28.3 ppg and 6.2 apg and was rated the No. 52 recruit in the country by Bob Gibbons' All-Star Sports as a senior. He fell just short of qualifying on his standardized tests, and Cal made an appeal on his behalf.

Cal Earns First AP Ranking in 2 Years
When Cal earned enough votes to hold down the 25th spot in the Jan. 4 Associated Press poll, it marked the Bears first AP ranking since they were 25th in the Feb. 17, 1997 ratings. Cal was 18th in the final USA Today/ESPN poll that came out after the 1997 NCAA Tournament in which the Bears reached the Sweet 16. After Cal's loss at No. 4 Stanford last Saturday, the Bears are 26th in this week's AP poll.

Haas Pavilion to Open for '99-00 Season
Cal will open the 1999-2000 season in a new on-campus arena - the Walter A. Haas Jr. Pavilion. The facility, which is being built on the site of the former Harmon Gym, will have a capacity of 12,300 - up from 6,578 in Harmon - and is named in honor of Walter and Evelyn Haas, who donated a lead gift of $10 million. Construction on the $57 million project got underway in the summer of 1997. The Bears played in Harmon Gym for 64 seasons (1933-97) and compiled a 588-300 record there.
