A Quick Look at the Golden Bears
Off to its best start in five years with a 10-2 overall record,
25th-ranked California starts one of its most difficult stretches of the
season Saturday when the Bears visit No. 4 Stanford. Next week, Cal
remains on the road for games at No. 7 UCLA and USC before returning
home to host 1998 Sweet 16 participant Washington.
After posting an impressive 78-71 win over then-No. 9 North Carolina
Dec. 29 in the Pete Newell Challenge, the Bears have struggled somewhat
in the first two Pac-10 games. Cal lost to Oregon, 71-69, in overtime,
then held on to defeat Oregon State, 54-52.
But the Bears have shown
a tendency to play tough on the road this year. After going just 3-10
away from home in 1997-98, Cal opened this season with a victory at
Hawaii. Although they lost, 75-72, at DePaul Thanksgiving weekend, the
Bears edged BYU, 71-70, in Provo last month.
Over the last four games, Cal has received strong play from senior guard
Thomas Kilgore. Averaging just 9.7 ppg on 34 percent shooting prior to
title game of the Golden Bear Classic, Kilgore has averaged 16.0 ppg
since and has made more than 58 percent of his shots. He led Cal in
scoring against both Southwestern Louisiana (16 points) and Oregon (17)
and tied a career high with 21 points versus North Carolina.
For the season, senior guard Geno Carlisle has been the Bears main
offensive threat with an average of 18.4 ppg. A mid-season candidate for
the John Wooden Award, Carlisle has already been voted Pac-10 Player of
the Week and to the all-tournament team at the Golden Bear Classic. He
has totaled at least 25 points five times, including a season-best 29
points in the victory over North Carolina. On the road, he is averaging
26.0 ppg this year.
Up front, the Bears boast one of the nation's top rebounders in
sophomore Sean Lampley. Now averaging 13.4 ppg and 10.4 rpg, Lampley has
already posted five double-doubles, including a 21-point, 18-board
performance vs. Houston. The MVP of the Golden Bear Classic, he has
paced Cal on the boards in 10 of the 11 games he has played. Lampley is
trying to become the first Cal player to average at least 10 rebounds
for a full season since Brian Hendrick (10.7 rpg) did in 1991-92.
As a unit, defense continues to be the strength of the team as the Bears
are limiting opponents to 38.1 percent field goal shooting and to 26.8
percent from three-point range. In addition, the Bears are forcing 21.25
turnovers per contest, while only committing 14.42 per game
themselves.

Cal on the Radio
All California games will be broadcast on KABL Radio (960 AM) in San
Francisco and KATD Radio (990 AM) in Concord with Roxy Bernstein calling
the action. Each broadcast begins 20 minutes prior to tip-off with the
Cal Basketball Pregame Show. After the game, head coach Ben Braun will
recap the action on the Cal Basketball Postgame Show. In addition to the
radio, broadcasts can be heard on the Internet at www.broadcast.com.
Cal Radio on Telephone
All Cal basketball radio broadcasts during the 1998-99 season are
available nationwide via telephone through TRZ Telephone Broadcast
Services. Fans may access the Cal games from anywhere in the country by
dialing 800-846-4700, extension 5918. The cost is 50 cents for the first
minute, with decreasing rates for each addition minute.
The Oakland Arena
While Haas Pavilion is under construction on campus, Cal will play
all of its home games at the Oakland Arena. Recently renovated and
expanded to 19,200 seats, the facility also serves as host to the NBA's
Golden State Warriors. Cal played its first game in Oakland in 1974 and
has an all-time mark of 34-19 there. The building, which was originally
built in 1966, served as host of the men's NCAA West Regionals in 1990
and '95 and the women's regionals in 1998.
Cal Coach Ben Braun
Ben Braun (Wisconsin '75), who was named the 14th head coach in Cal
history on Sept. 15, 1996, is in his third year in Berkeley and 22nd
season as collegiate head coach. He agreed to a new eight-year contract
with Cal in October 1997 that extends through the 2004-05 season. His
record at Cal stands at 45-26, while his career mark, which includes 11
years at Eastern Michigan and eight seasons at Siena Heights College, is
378-261. The 1997 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and a finalist for '97
National Coach of the Year honors, Braun led the Bears to the NCAA Sweet
16 in 1997. At EMU from 1985-96, the three-time MAC Coach of the Year
guided the Eagles to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT appearance with
an overall record of 185-132. A native of Chicago, Braun played one year
of basketball at Wisconsin-LaCrosse before transferring to
Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a teaching degree in English with a
minor in African-American studies in 1975. He received his master's
degree in guidance and counseling from Siena Heights.
Stanford Scouting Report
A Look at Stanford (12-2, 2-0)
Stanford, which advanced to the Final Four last year, is the
favorite to win the Pac-10 title this season. In November, the Cardinal
reached the championship game of the Preseason NIT before falling to
North Carolina. Stanford has started the same lineup in all 14 games and
will be riding an eight-game winning streak when its hosts Cal.
Cal-Stanford Series History
Cal owns a 135-96 lead in a series that dates back to the 1911-12
season. Stanford, though, has won the last three games and five of the
past seven. Last year, the Cardinal beat Cal, 84-74, at home and, 74-72,
at the Oakland Arena.
Stanford Head Coach Mike Montgomery
Mike Montgomery is in his 13th season at Stanford and has compiled a
247-134 record. He has led the Cardinal to six NCAA and four NIT
tournaments, including the 1991 NIT title and the 1998 NCAA Final Four.
Prior to moving to Stanford, Montgomery was 154-77 in eight years at
Montana.

Golden Bear Notes
Gill's Bucket Lifts Cal over Oregon State, 54-52
Senior forward Michael Gill put in his own missed shot with 3.5
seconds left to give Cal a 54-52 victory over Oregon State Monday at the
Oakland Arena. The Bears led, 24-16, in the first half, but did not
score over the final 7:11 of the period and trailed, 25-24, at the
break. In the second half, OSU led by as many as seven points before Cal
rallied. The Bears shot only 29.0 percent for the game, and their 54
points was the team's lowest total in a winning effort since Cal beat
St. Mary's, 53-51, on Dec. 17, 1986.
Cal to Face Three Top 10 Teams in Five Games
Cal is in the midst of the most daunting part of its schedule as the
Bears will face three Top 10 teams in a five-game span. The stretch
started Dec. 29 when Cal upended then-No. 9 North Carolina, 78-71, in
the Pete Newell Challenge. After hosting Oregon and Oregon State last
weekend, the Bears will visit No. 4 Stanford Saturday and No. 7 UCLA
Jan. 14. Cal went through a similar stretch last season when the Bears
played No. 6 Arizona, No. 9 Stanford, No. 23 Rhode Island, USC and No. 9
UCLA in consecutive games in late January and early February.
Bears Look to Break Five-Game Streak at Stanford
When Cal visits Stanford Saturday, the Bears will be looking to break a five-game losing streak at Maples Pavilion. Cal's last win on the Cardinal's home floor was an 86-61 decision on Feb. 14, 1993. Still, the Bears own a 72-57 all-time record at Stanford. Outside of Stanford, the only other Pac-10 venue where Cal has a longer losing streak is at Arizona State, where the Bears have lost eight in a row.

Bears Figuring Out How to Win Close Games
After going 0-8 in games decided by three points or less last
season, then losing a 75-72 decision at DePaul Nov. 28, Cal was watching
an ugly trend develop. But since then, the Bears have started to reverse
things, starting with a 58-56 victory over Coppin State Dec. 7. In their
next game Dec. 19, the Bears edged BYU, 71-70, in Provo. After a 71-69
overtime setback to Oregon Jan. 2, Cal came back to beat Oregon State,
54-52, Jan. 4 to give the Bears a 3-2 record in close games this season.
Slow Pac-10 Starts Not Uncommon for Cal
Including last Saturday's loss to Oregon, Cal has now lost its last
three Pac-10 openers dating back to the 1997 season. That year, the
Bears fell at Arizona, 81-80, while Cal lost at Oregon, 66-59, last
season. In fact, the Bears are just 3-7 in conference openers in the
1990s. However, opening losses have not always given an indication of
future results as Cal rebounded from an 0-2 Pac-10 start in 1997 to tie
for second in the league with a 12-6 mark.
Kilgore Picks Up Pace
Senior guard Thomas Kilgore, who was shooting just 32.7 percent from
the field through the season's first six games, has watched his
production rise dramatically the last four games. Kilgore started Cal's
first six contests and averaged 9.7 ppg. However, he missed the team bus
to the airport for the BYU game and was held out of the Eastern Kentucky
game as well. Since then, Kilgore has become much more of a contributor.
Over his last four games, Kilgore is averaging 16.0 ppg and shooting
58.8 percent from the floor (20-34). Included in that stretch was a
21-point effort against North Carolina, tying a career high. He also led
the Bears with 16 points against SW Louisiana and 17 points versus
Oregon.

Defense Key to Bears Success
Since his arrival at Cal in September 1996, head coach Ben Braun has
emphasized defense to his Golden Bear teams. In his first season in
Berkeley, his Bears led the Pac-10 in scoring defense - a factor that
played a major role in Cal's run to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Last year, with a roster that featured seven newcomers, Cal again ranked
near the top of the conference, this time coming in second in scoring
defense. And the 1998-99 season has started out no different. So far,
the Bears are limiting opponents to just 38.1 percent from the floor, to
26.8 percent from three-point range and to 64.0 ppg overall. In
addition, Cal owns a +6.83 per game turnover differential, has blocked
54 shots (4.5 per game) and picked off 120 steals (10.0 per game). Only
one opponent (North Carolina) has made more than 33.3 percent of its
three-point attempts in any game, and the Bears have forced at least 20
turnovers nine times (all wins).
Cal Off to Best Start Since 1993-94
At 10-2, Cal is off to its best start since the 1993-94 Bears, led
by All-Americans Jason Kidd and Lamond Murray, also began 10-2 en route
to a 22-8 mark. If Cal can upset Stanford Saturday, the Bears would be
off to their fastest start since Pete Newell's 1959-60 squad began 28-1
on its way to the NCAA championship game.
Carlisle Lighting Up Scoreboard for Bears
Senior guard Geno Carlisle, who has switched from shooting guard to
point guard this season, has not let the move affect his scoring
ability. After leading Cal with 17.9 ppg last year, Carlisle is
averaging 18.4 ppg this season. He has already tallied at least 25
points five times, including all three road contests: 26 at Hawaii, 25
at DePaul and 27 at BYU. In addition, he had 26 points in Cal's win over
Rhode Island and a season-high 29 points in the win over North Carolina
Dec. 29 (also Carlisle's high in a home game during his Cal career). In
addition to his scoring, Carlisle leads Cal in assists with 41 (3.4 per
game). He dished out a career-best seven assists against USL Dec. 22. He
has also had six assists in a game twice and added five assists with no
turnovers vs. EKU Dec. 21.

Carlisle Coming Up Big in Clutch
Geno Carlisle not only leads Cal in scoring, but he also has
demonstrated a knack for coming up big in clutch situations. Nowhere was
that more evident than in Cal's 78-71 win over North Carolina when
Carlisle scored 10 of his 29 points in the final five minutes to bring
the Bears back from a 10-point deficit. He also had nine of his 26
points in the last five minutes against Rhode Island and eight points
(out of 27 total) in the final five minutes in a 71-70 victory at BYU.
Cal Ranked 25th in Associated Press Poll
Cal entered the Top 25 for the first time this season when the Golden
Bears were ranked 25th in the Jan. 4 Associated Press poll. The last
time Cal was ranked by AP was on Feb. 17, 1997 when the Bears were also
25th in the ratings. In the USA Today/ESPN poll, Cal was last ranked in
the April 4, 1997 poll when the Bears were 18th after their run to the
NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Lampley Tied for 10th Nationally in Rebounds
Sophomore Sean Lampley has posted double-doubles in five of his 11 games
this season, and as a result, he ranks tied for 10th in the nation in
rebounding. The 6-7 forward, who missed the opener while recuperating
from a hand injury, grabbed 10 boards vs. Eastern Washington, a
then-career-high 14 rebounds at DePaul and a current career-best 18
boards vs. Houston. After getting a team-best seven boards in the win
over Rhode Island, Lampley came back with another double-double (12-11)
vs. Coppin State. He had 15 more rebounds against Eastern Kentucky Dec.
22. Lampley has led Cal in rebounding 10 times this season, and he is
trying to become the first Cal player to average at least 10 rpg for a
full season since Brian Hendrick (10.7 rpg) in 1991-92.

Cal Proves It Can Win on Road
After going just 3-10 away from home last year, Cal is off to a 2-1
start on the road in 1998-99, winning at Hawaii (71-60) and BYU (71-70),
but losing at DePaul (75-72). The Bears did not pick up their second
road win of '97-98 until defeating Washington State in Pullman on Jan.
24. The Bears next two road games will be big tests for the team as they
go to Top 10 schools Stanford Jan. 9 and UCLA Jan. 14.
Second Half Surges the Norm for Cal
So far this season, Cal has scored at least as many points in the
second half as in the first half in every game. The Bears are averaging
35.3 points over the first 20 minutes, but raise that rate to 39.7
points after intermission. Cal's highest first half outputs came against
Eastern Washington and versus Southwestern Louisiana when the Bears
scored 46 points. However, they topped that with a 48 points in the
second half in both contests. The biggest differential came at BYU when
the Bears scored 28 points in the first half and 43 in the second.

Cal Turning Up the Turnovers
With 255 turnovers forced in its first 12 games, Cal is coaxing
opponents into an average of 21.25 turnovers per game, almost three more
per game than in any other season since statistics started being kept
during the 1978-79 season. The school record for average turnovers
forced came during Jason Kidd's freshman year in 1992-93 when the Bears
forced 18.40 turnovers per game. This year's Cal squad is being led by a
trio of Bears who rank among the Top 10 in the conference in steals -
senior guard Thomas Kilgore (3rd at 2.50 spg), senior forward Mike Gill
(T9th at 1.50 spg) and freshman guard Dennis Gates (T9th at 1.50 spg).
Below is a look at the Top 5 seasons in terms of turnovers forced per

Haas Pavilion to Open for '98-99 Season
Cal will open the 1998-99 season in a new on-campus arena - the
Walter A. Haas Jr. Pavilion. The facility, which is being built on the
site of the former Harmon Gym, will have a capacity of 12,300 - up from
6,578 in Harmon - and is named in honor of Walter and Evelyn Haas, who
donated a lead gift of $10 million. Construction on the $50 million
project got underway in the summer of 1997. The Bears played in Harmon
Gym for 64 seasons (1933-97) and compiled a 588-300 record there. The
final game at the facility came on March 6, 1997 when Cal defeated
Arizona State, 84-66.
Golden Bear Notes
Including its overtime loss to Oregon Saturday, Cal owns an all-time
record of 20-34 in single OT games; however, the Bears are 13-7 in
multiple OT games in their history Geno Carlisle has been listed among
