A Quick Look at the Golden Bears
California plays its last two home games of the year when the Bears host Arizona and Arizona State this week at the Oakland Arena. Cal is looking to regroup after losing two games in Washington one week after beating both USC and UCLA at home.

Cal enters the Arizona game needing one more win to assure the team of a winning season and to give head coach Ben Braun his 50th victory at Cal. Braun goes into the contest with a 49-34 record with the Bears.

This week also marks the final home appearances for four Cal seniors - guards Geno Carlisle and Thomas Kilgore, forward Mike Gill and center Francisco Elson. Carlisle has been Cal's leading scorer the past two seasons. He averaged 17.9 ppg last year and is at 15.3 ppg this season, with a high of 29 points versus North Carolina in late December. Carlisle also paces the Bears with 96 assists, an average of 4.0 per game.

Since the start of Pac-10 play, the most consistent offensive player for Cal has been Kilgore, who came through with his biggest night as a Bear at Washington State last Thursday. He tallied a Cal career-high 34 points (he had 35 at Iona in 1994 as a freshman at Central Michigan) and grabbed seven rebounds against the Cougars. The point total was the fifth highest at Cal since 1982 and the most for a Bear since Ed Gray put up a school-record 48 points at WSU in 1997.

Gill has started 17 of 24 games this season and ranks fourth on the squad in scoring with 9.7 ppg and second in steals with 31. In Pac-10 play, he is 27-for-30 from the free throw line (90.0%) and has made 13 straight from the charity stripe.

In the middle, Elson has started 19 times this year. He leads the Bears with 29 blocks, including a career-best five at Washington State and three more at Washington last weekend. Elson has also improved his field goal shooting to a team-high 52.6 percent, up from 43.1 percent last year.

His record at Cal stands at 49-34, while his career mark, which includes 11 years at Eastern Michigan and eight seasons at Siena Heights College, is 382-269. The 1997 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and a finalist for '97 National Coach of the Year honors, Braun led the Bears to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1997. At EMU from 1985-96, the three-time MAC Coach of the Year guided the Eagles to three NCAA Tournaments and one NIT appearance with an overall record of 185-132. A native of Chicago, Braun played one year of basketball at Wisconsin-LaCrosse before transferring to Wisconsin-Madison, where he earned a teaching degree in English with a minor in African-American studies in 1975. He received his master's degree in guidance and counseling from Siena Heights.

    Golden Bear Notes

Kilgore Has Biggest Game for Cal Since 1997
There must be something about Pullman's Friel Court that brings out big individual scoring games for Cal. But in three of the four recent cases, the result has been a Cal loss. In the 1994 season finale, Lamond Murray soared to a career-high 38 points and Jason Kidd tied a personal best with 27 points, but WSU won, 94-82, to prevent the Bears from gaining a share of the Pac-10 title. In January 1996, Cal upended the Cougars 87-79 behind 32 points and a career-best 18 rebounds by freshman Shareef Abdur-Rahim. In February 1997, Ed Gray set a school record with 48 points before breaking his foot in the closing minutes as the Bears lost, 89-87. And just last Thursday, Thomas Kilgore had 34 - his highest total as a Golden Bear (Kilgore scored 35 against Iona as a freshman at Central Michigan in 1994) - in a 79-73 WSU victory. Kilgore, Cal's only player in double figures on the night, shot 11-for-18 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three-point range and 10-for-14 from the free throw line. He also grabbed seven boards.

Washington Pulls Away from Cal, 86-61
Washington got 17 points and 19 rebounds from center Todd MacCulloch as the Huskies handed Cal a 86-61 loss in Seattle last Saturday. The game marked Cal's worst loss since falling to Stanford, 92-66, on Feb. 15, 1992 at the Oakland Arena. Washington used a 17-6 run midway through the first half to break open a tie game and grab a 25-14 lead. Cal, which trailed by 14 at the break, scored the first five points of the second half. But the Huskies ran off 17 of the next 21 points to put the game away. Freshman center Solomon Hughes came off the bench for 10 points (5-6 FG), tying his career high and matching Geno Carlisle and Thomas Kilgore for team scoring honors.

    Defense Key to Cal Success
In jumping out to a 9-1 record the first six weeks of the season - the fastest start for the Bears since the 1980-81 team also began 9-1 - Cal relied on a pressure defense that limited opponents to just 37.0 percent field goal shooting and to 64.5 ppg. But over the first half of the Pac-10 season, when the Bears were only 3-6, opponents made 48.2 percent of their shots and scored 72.9 ppg. Cal seemed to have rediscovered its defense in its next three contests. First, the Bears held Stanford to 57 points and to 38.0 percent shooting (including 4-for-19, 21.1% in the second half). Then in its win over USC Feb. 11, the Trojans were only 20-for-59 from the field (33.9%) and totaled 55 points. In the second half, USC was held to 27.6 percent shooting (8-for-29). The story was the same in Cal's victory over UCLA as the Bruins managed to shoot 36.4 percent and were held to 67 points, 11 points below their average entering the game. However, in their two losses in Washington last weekend, the Bears did not put up much of a defensive fight. Washington State raced to a 48-31 halftime lead, buoyed by 54.5 percent field goal shooting. Washington then shot 52.5 percent for the game in handing Cal an 86-61 loss.

Cal-UCLA Game Breaks Pac-10 Attendance Record
Cal broke the Pac-10 single-game attendance record when 15,676 fans showed up to watch the Bears upset ninth-ranked UCLA Feb. 13 at the Oakland Arena. The old mark for a regular-season Pac-10 game was 15,517 set in 1992 when UCLA played USC at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. Cal has now drawn more than 15,000 three times this season, including 19,657 for the Pete Newell Challenge doubleheader Dec. 29 (Cal vs. North Carolina, Stanford vs. Temple) and 15,269 for the Cal-Stanford match-up Feb. 3. For the season, Cal ranks second in the Pac-10 in home attendance with an average of 10,704 per game. With two home dates remaining, Cal is certain to break its school record for season attendance. Through the 14 home games, 149,951 fans have attended. With more than 22,000 in advance tickets sales for the upcoming Arizona and Arizona State games, Cal has sold approximately 172,000 tickets for the season. The current mark is 166,317 (10,395 per game) set during the 1993-94 season.

    Kilgore Picks Up Pace
Thomas Kilgore's season took a big change for the better when he entered Cal's game against Southwestern Louisiana Dec. 22. Prior to that game, he was shooting just 32.7 percent from the field and averaging only 9.7 ppg. But starting with that contest against the Ragin' Cajuns, Kilgore has averaged 16.3 ppg on 51.7 percent shooting. Twice during that stretch he had 21 points - first against North Carolina, then at Stanford. Kilgore also set a personal best with eight rebounds against the Cardinal. In addition, he led the Bears with 16 points against SW Louisiana, 17 points versus Oregon and 19 points against Washington and tied for team honors with 15 points versus both Washington State and Stanford at home. Kilgore's biggest game came at Washington State Feb. 18 when he finished with 34 points and seven rebounds. He is one of only two players in the Pac-10 to have reached double figures in every league game (also UCLA's Baron Davis).

When King Plays Well, Everybody Loves Raymond
Junior point guard Raymond King has seen his playing time increase dramatically in recent games, and he has taken full advantage of his opportunity. Seldom used early in the year, King has made two starts in recent weeks - in both contests against Washington. Prior to the first Washington game Jan. 21, King sat out two games entirely and played less than 10 minutes in eight others. But since then, King has played at least 10 minutes in eight of his last nine games, including a high of 27 minutes at Washington Feb. 20. He had one of his best games of the season at Arizona with nine points (3-5 FG, 1-2 3P, 2-2 FT), four assists (no turnovers) and two steals in 22 minutes. King also had a season-high 10 points (3-4 FG, 2-2 3P, 2-4 FT) with four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 21 minutes versus USC. King is shooting 50.0 percent from the floor (17-34) and 40 percent from three-point range (4-10) with 24 assists, only 10 turnovers and 13 steals in Pac-10 action.

    Lampley Controls Boards for Bears
Sophomore forward Sean Lampley may be only 6-7, but he stands tall as one of the best rebounders in the Pac-10. Lampley is averaging a team-high 8.7 rpg, which ranks fifth in the league. For the season, Lampley has led Cal on the glass 17 times in the 23 games he has played (he missed the season-opener with a hand injury). He best game came Dec. 3 when he had personal-best 18 rebounds (to go with a career-high-tying 21 points) against Houston. Other big rebounding efforts have come against DePaul Nov. 28 (14), Eastern Kentucky Dec. 21 (15), USC Jan. 16 (11) and UCLA Feb. 13 (11). Lampley has seven double-doubles on the year, including an 18-points, 11-rebound effort vs. UCLA, and nearly had a seventh when he finished with 14 points and nine rebounds in the Bears win over North Carolina.

    Cal Turning Up the Turnovers
With 455 turnovers forced in its 24 games, Cal is coaxing opponents into an average of 18.96 turnovers per game, more per game than in any other season since statistics started being kept during the 1978-79 season. The school record for average turnovers forced came during Jason Kidd's freshman year in 1992-93 when the Bears forced 18.40 turnovers per game. Cal has had a positive turnover margin in all but four games (15-14 at DePaul, 21-20 at UCLA, 12-12 at Arizona State, 15-10 vs. USC) and has posted a double-digit margin four times: +17 vs. North Carolina, +12 vs. Eastern Kentucky, +11 vs. Eastern Washington and +11 vs. Oregon State. Below is a look at the Top 5 seasons in terms of turnovers forced per game.
