BEARS HEAD TO NCAAs: The No. six ranked California women's swim team (11-3) heads to Athens, GA, to participate in the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships after placing third at the Pac-10 Championships (1155.5 points) Feb. 26-28 in Federal Way, WA. The NCAA meet will begin on Thursday, March 18 and will conclude Saturday, March 20. Prelims will be held at 11 a.m. daily with finals beginning at 7 p.m. daily. The Bears will send 13 swimmers-one senior, four juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen, to the championships to compete in all 18 swimming events. Meet results will be available each day at the following numbers: 706-542-7125 or 706-583-0267 from 3 p.m.-10:30 p.m. Eastern time.

HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever is in her seventh season as Cal's head women's swim coach. McKeever has a 64-29 (.681) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 118-52 (.694) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a 15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place finish in 1995, a 17th place finish in 1996, a ninth place finish in 1997 and an eighth place finish in 1998.

NOTING THE BEARS: Leading the Bears at the Pac-10 Championship was senior Marylyn Chiang (The Pas, Manitoba, Canada), who captured the 100 back with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.50, the best time in the nation this year. Chiang also won the 200 IM (1:58.25), tying the school record, and placed second in the 100 fly (53.21), posting the second best all-time Cal mark. Junior Waen Minpraphal (Bangkok, Thailand) also took home a Pac-10 title with her win in the 400 IM (4:13.78), the second best all-time Cal mark. The Bears also placed first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.47(Mattos, Kolbisen, Omphroy, Chiang). Others individual point scorers for the Bears were freshmen Lisa Murray (Seattle, WA), Alice Henriques (New Hope, PA), Andi Finlay (Sunnyvale, CA) and Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore). Murray finished second in the 1650 free (16:24.60, fifth-best all-time Cal mark) and was fifth in the 500 free (4:48.53). Henriques took fifth in the 200 back (1:58.94, fifth-best all-time Cal mark), while Finlay finished eighth in the 100 back (56.37). Yeo placed third in the 200 IM (2:00.97, fifth-best all-time Cal mark), fifth in the 200 fly (2:00.41) and fourth in the 100 fly (53.88, third-best all-time Cal mark), automatically qualifying for NCAAs in the 100 fly. Cal sophomore Haley Cope (Chico, CA) also automatically qualified for the NCAAs with a sixth place finish in the 100 fly (54.36) and picked up points for the Bears with a fourth place finish in the 100 back (55.58). Sophomore Adrienne Mattos (Mountain View, CA) and juniors Nicole Omphroy (Clovis, CA) and Anya Kolbisen (Half Moon Bay, CA) also helped the Bears, capturing fourth (23.07), fifth (23.40) and sixth place (23.44), respectively, in the 50 free. Kolbisen then took seventh in the 200 free (1:48.97) and second in the 100 free (49.97) in front of Omphroy, who placed sixth (50.61) and Mattos, who placed seventh (50.71). Junior Amy Simpson (Visalia, CA) captured eighth in the 100 fly (55.13), while sophomore Hanna Jalter (Vaxjo, Sweden) took sixth in the 100 breast (1:03.04).

SCHOOL RECORDS: Ten school records were broken by Cal this season (three school records, seven dual meet records) and the Bears set five new Spieker Aquatics Complex records. Chiang broke the school record in the 100 back (53.29), and new records were established by the 200 medley (1:40.85 Chiang, Jaltner, Simpson, Mattos) and 400 free (3:17.66 Chiang, Kolbisen, Yeo, Omphroy) relays. Chiang also set a dual meet record in the 100 back (53.74) and 100 fly (53.21). Minpraphal set a dual meet record in the 400 IM (4:16.95) and dual meet records were set by the 200 free relay (1:33.29 Kolbisen, Mattos, Yeo, Chiang), 400 free relay (3:19.75 Kolbisen, Yeo, Omphroy, Chiang), 200 medley relay (1:42.48 Cope, Yeo, Minpraphal, Mattos) and 400 medley relay (3:42.80 Chiang, Jaltner, Minpraphal, Kolbisen). Spieker Aquatic Complex records set by the Bears this season included Chiang in the 100 back (54.07 Feb. 13 vs. Stanford), Yeo in the 200 IM (2:02.48 Jan. 29 vs. USC), Minpraphal in the 400 IM (4:16.95 Feb. 13 vs. Stanford) and the 200 free relay (1:33.29 Jan. 30 vs. UCLA Kolbisen, Mattos, Yeo Chiang) and 400 free relay (3:19.75 Feb. 13 vs. Stanford Kolbisen, Yeo, Omphroy, Chiang).
