Men's Basketball Team One Win Away from Madison Square Garden
Golden Bears meet Colorado State for the right to head to New York.
March 17, 1999
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - March has been a better month for Colorado State and California than
November.
The two teams both took similar paths to reach the third round of the
National Invitation Tournament by avenging early-season losses in the second
round. The two teams meet Thursday to decide who goes to New York City to play
in the tournament semifinals at Madison Square Garden.
California (19-11) defeated Fresno State in the first round before its
controversial win at DePaul in the second round Tuesday. The Golden Bears, who
lost 75-72 at DePaul on Nov. 28, led by one with 21 seconds left. DePaul tried
to set up a winning shot, but the Blue Demons' Willie Coleman got tangled up
under the basket and California's Sean Lampley came up with the ball.
But Lampley was called for traveling under the Blue Demons' basket
with what
appeared to be one-tenth of a second left, giving the ball back to DePaul.
Officials watched a courtside TV replay and initially restored the
clock to
1.3 seconds.
After another review, it was changed again to three-tenths of a second,
prompting a heated argument from DePaul coach Pat Kennedy, who asked to see
the
replay and for more time.
But it stayed at three-tenths. After a timeout, Coleman took an inbounds
pass and threw up a desperation shot, but his jumper went off the rim.
Geno Carlisle led California with 16 points and Lampley had 14 rebounds.
Colorado State (19-10) defeated Mississippi State 69-56 in the first
round
and then avenged a November loss to Colorado in the second round, beating the
Buffaloes 86-76 on Tuesday night.
Ceedric Goodwyn, who played sparingly in the first meeting between the
teams, scored 21 points to lead the Rams.
Milt Palacio had 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds and Andre
McKanstry added 16 points for Colorado State.
The game marks the first meeting ever between the two teams.
