Women's Soccer Settles for Weekend Split

September 13, 1998

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - For the second consecutive weekend, the California women's soccer team could only manage a split as the Golden Bears moved to 2-2 on the season with a 1-0 win over Montana and a 2-0 loss to No. 12 San Diego State at the Cal Poly Tournament.

Cal's Natalie Stuhlmueller (Los Gatos) netted her second goal of the year at the 55-minute mark and the Bears improved to 2-1 on the season with a dominating win over defending Big Sky champions Montana in the tournament opener Friday night. For the third straight game, the Bears out shot their opponent by a wide margin, this time 17-5, but had a difficult time finishing opportunities. Stuhlmueller also led the Bears in shots for the match with five.

The victory was also Cal's second shutout on the season as goalkeeper Maite Zabala (Boise, ID), who was rarely challenged during the match and faced only one Grizzly shot in the second half, improved her goals against average to 0.75.

On Sunday, San Diego State's Lorrie LaCorersiere scored the only two goals of the match during a five minute span early in the second half as the 12th-ranked Aztecs handed the Bears their second loss of the season.

Despite being shut out for the first time this season, the match was a back-and-forth affair with both sides unleashing seven shots on the afternoon. But, once again, Cal struggled to convert its scoring opportunities as goalkeeper Katherine Judkins came up with six big saves to preserve her fourth shutout of the season.

Cal returns to action next weekend when the Bears travel to the Pacific Northwest for a neutral site match versus Utah in Seattle, Friday, Sept. 18, at 4 p.m. before heading down the coast to face 7th-ranked Portland, Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2:15 p.m.
