TEMPE, Ariz. - Anita Kurimay and Claire Curran teamed up to capture the ASU Fall Classic doubles championship with a 8-6 pro set victory over teammates Amy Jensen and Karoline Borgersen in an all-Cal final Sunday.
Both teams cruised through their respective brackets, each winning three matches to reach the final.
It is the second consecutive year that Curran has captured the doubles title at the ASU Fall Classic after combining with Esther Knox to bring home last year's crown.
On the singles side of the ledger, Jensen won four straight matches, including a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 semifinal bout with Curran, to reach Sunday's final. But fell just short of taking the championship, falling to Jennifer Embry of Purdue in a tension filled three-set match that went down to the wire. Embry captured set one, 6-3, but Jensen bounced back to take the second, 6-4. The two then slugged it out until Embry settled things by taking the third and final set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5).
Up next on the docket for Cal is the All-American Tennis Championships from Riviera Country Club in Palos Verdes, Calif., Oct. 17-25.
