Men's Golf Bounces Back, Climbs to Sixth After Hot Third Round

April 27, 1999

SEATTLE - After fighting its way through the first two rounds at the 1999 Pacific-10 Championship, the California men's golf team finally appears to have solved the course at the Broadmoor Country Club (par 70, 6186 yards).

The Golden Bears, who had only one player break par yesterday, carded the best team score of the third round and second-best of the entire tournament with a combined 1-under-par 349 Tuesday that move the Bears within striking distance of a Top 5 finish. Cal, which climbed three places to sixth, head into Wednesday's fourth and final round at 42-over 1092, 45 strokes behind tournament leader Arizona State, which has led after all three rounds. Oregon (19-over 1069) maintained its hold on second place followed by UCLA (20-over 1070), Washington (25-over 1075) and Stanford (38-over 1088), in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Han Lee (Cerritos) helped lead the Bears back to the pack with a 3-under 67 third round that moved the junior from 20th to seventh. Making the biggest jump of any golfer Tuesday, however, was fellow junior Dong Yi (Alameda), who rebounded from a miserable opening two rounds (79-79-158) to card a team-low 5-under 65. Entering the third round in 60th place, Yi climbed 25 spots today and heads into the final round in a tied with a group of seven individuals, that includes teammate Dan Coyle (Dundalk, Ire.), tied for 35th. Dan Arroyo (Walnut Creek) also bounced back from a substandard second round to post a 2-under 68 and is now tied for 19th at 6-over 216.

Senior Jay Berkowitz (Weaverville) carded his best round of the tournament Tuesday with a 4-over 74 and is tied for 42nd, while junior Robert Hamilton (Sacramento) continued his struggles, finishing at 8-over 78 tied for 53rd.

Stanford's Joel Kribel (Pleasanton), who recorded a tournament-best 7-under 63, took over the top spot among individuals at 13-under 197, with ASU's Paul Kasey and Oregon's Andrew Tredway tied for second at 5-under 205.

The fourth and final round of the 1999 Pac-10 Championship tees off from Broadmoor, at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
