Bears Stand Second at Pac-10 Women's Swimming & Diving Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Stanford got off to a strong start in its bid for a 14th-stright Pac-10 Women's swimming championship by jumping out to big lead scoring 485 points in the first day of the three-day competition at the Weyerhaeuser/King County Aquatic Center. California is in second with 345 points.

Stanford was led by Catherine Fox who won the 50-freestyle with a time of 22.81. It is the second stright year she has finished first at the Pac-10 in the 50-free, sharing last years title with teammate, Siobahn Cropper who finished this years event in seventh place, touching the wall in 23.61. Cals Karen Campbell took second in the 50-free with a 22.98. Stanford also shattered its own meet record set last last year in the 400-yard medley by turning in a 3:36.30 effort, nearly two seconds faster than last seasons mark. Stanford won three of the days six events.

California senior Marylyn Chiang sparked the fifth-ranked Bears with by winning the 200-yard individual medly in record time. The time of 1:58.25 was a season-best by over two seconds. Chiang was also par of a Cal team that won the 200-freestyle relay.

USC's Kelli Brennan won the 1-meter diving competition with, scoring 431.85, the highest total in a Pac-10 Championship since 1989. Carissa Zenorini was second of the board with 425.65, folllowed by defending 1-meter champion Dorte Lindner of USC.

Washington finished the day in sixth place after a seventh place finish last season. The Huskies were led by the eighth-place finish of Addy Elsner in the 200-IM. Elsner touched the was in 2:03.15 to score 21 of Washingtons 142.5 team-points. Washingtons 400-medley relay team took fourth with a season-best time of 3:45.15. Washington trails fifth place UCLA by 144 points.

No. 4 Arizona enters will enter the second day of competition in third place with 344.50, followed closely by USC with 321. Arizona State looks to move up from its seventh place position after a disqualification in the 200-freestyle relay. Washington State is in eighth with 104.5 and Oregon State ninth with 84.

In the mens diving competition, USC standout Justin Dumais won the 3-meter diving easily scoring 658.05 points. Second place diver, Allan Sonkin of Arizona State scored 516.55 points, 14 better than Arizonas Arno Bergstrom.

The Pac-10 women's swimming and mens and womens diving championship continues tomorrow with preliminaries beginning at 9:30 a.m.
