Berkeley -- The University of California baseball team has signed pitching standout Trevor Hutchinson to a national letter of intent, it was announced by head coach Bob Milano today.
Hutchinson, a 6-5, 190-pounder from Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, CA, currently has an impressive 1.66 ERA. This season, he has only given up seven earned runs in 38.0 innings with 17 hits, seven walks and 69 strikeouts while posting a 2-3 record. With a fastball at 88 to 91 miles per hour, Hutchinson also throws a split-finger fastball, a curveball and a change-up. He was mentioned in Baseball America as one of the 50 top high school players in the nation and one of the 100 top high school professional prospects. Hutchinson is the younger brother of Stanford quarterback and top pitcher Chad Hutchinson.
Hutchinson was also a top prep quarterback at Torrey Pines, leading his team to the CIF San Diego title this past fall. He was recruited in football by Cal, Colorado and UCLA; and in baseball by Arizona and UCLA before selecting to play baseball for the Golden Bears.
"Trevor is a definite blue-chipper and one of the few remaining blue-chippers available at this stage of the recruiting process," said associated head coach David Lawn. "We are extremely fortunate to get a player of his caliber in April. We anticipate Trevor will be able to contribute immediately to our program next season."
Hutchinson joins left-handed first baseman/outfielder Derek Ayres and switch-hitting catcher/infielder/outfielder Tyler Beuerlein as the Bears 1998 recruiting class.
