BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore forward Kendall Simmonds scored both of Cal's goals, including the game-winner in the 87th minute to secure a 2-1 season opening win over Butler at the Indiana-Adidas/Metlife Soccer Classic. The Bulldogs, the '97 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Champion, fall to 0-1.
The Bears led at the half, 1-0, on an unassisted goal by Simmonds from 16-yards out in the 26th minute.
Midfielder Stephen Armstrong, the Bulldogs' top returning scorer from '97, tied the score in the 63rd minute with a blast from 22-yards after receiving a feed from forward Giancarlo Barraza.
With the final minutes winding down, Simmonds put Cal up for good with a six-yard header. Junior John MacDonald and sophomore Ramiro Arrendondo were credited with the assists.
The Bears face third-ranked Indiana tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. PT, and look to avenge a 3-1 loss to the Hoosiers in Berkeley last season.
