STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's golf team shot a first round 308 Friday tying for 15th with New Mexcio but is only eight shots off the pace of fourth place at the 35th-annual Stanford/PEPSI Women's Intercollegiate. The 54-hole, 19-team tournament features 10 of the Top 25 teams in the country. Freshman Anne Walker (Lanarkshire, Scotland) is the Bears top performer, firing a 72 tying for eighth with Jenna Daniels of Arizona.
Seventh-ranked and defending champion Stanford carded a 288 to finish in first after day one, five shots ahead of second- place Indiana (293) and 10 shots ahead of third-place Arizona (298). No. 18 New Mexico State and No. 25 Washington are tied for fourth with 300. Individually, Erin Carney of indiana and Elisha Au of Washington lead all golfers with 70, while five golfers shot a 71 tying for third, including Hilary Homeyer of Stanford, last year's individual medalist.
The tournament wraps up with 18 holes on Saturday and Sunday at the Stanford Golf Course. Tee times are at 8 a.m. Saturday, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Sunday.
