Men's Golf Increases Lead to 11 Strokes

Feb. 6, 1998

MONTERREY, Mexico-- The California men's golf didn't quite tear up the course at Club Campestre like they did during the opening round of play but the Golden Bears, nevertheless, did play solid golf and increased their lead four strokes and now possess a commanding 11 stroke lead after combining to shoot 2-under-par 286 Friday in Monterrey, Mexico. Cal's two-day total now stands at 24-under-par 552.

North Texas, which combined to shoot a 5-under-par 283 Friday moved into second place behind Cal at 15-under 561. Brigham Young (14-under 562), Southern Methodist (13-under 563), and Baylor (9-under 567) round out the team top five.

Thursday's individual leader, California junior Jay Berkowitz, shot a Cal school record 8-under-par 64 in the opening round of play but cooled off in today's action, shooting 1-over 73 and dropping into a two-way tie for sixth place with teammate jjunior Dan Arroyo at 5-under-par 137. Arroyo also had a difficult time improving his score from Thursday but still managed to shoot 2-under in Thursday's action.

The highlight for Cal during the second round of play was provided by sophomore Han Lee, who moved into second place overall at 8-under-par 136 with a 3-under 69 Friday. Freshman Adam Ainbinder, who finished Friday's second round 2-over-par, is in a five-way tie for 21st place at 2-under (68-74--142), while junior Dan Coyle stands in 57th at 3-over (72-75--147).

The Bears will try secure the tournament championship Saturday when the third and final round of play at the International Intercollegiate wraps up. Tee times are set for 7:30 a.m., CST, and results will be made available as soon as play is completed.
