THE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Cal mens crew travels to Sacramento to compete at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships May 17 on Lake Natoma. The one-day racing format will include early morning qualifying heats followed by afternoon finals in each of the events.

GOLDEN BEAR OUTLOOK: The Bears are in the hunt for the varsity title as they garner the No 2 seed. The No. 1-seeded Washington Huskies are the only crew to finish ahead of the Cal this season. Cal placed second behind Washington at the San Diego Crew Classic to open the season April 5. In the two crews only other meeting this year, the Bears suffered breakage and were not able to finish the race.

The Bears JV and freshman crews did post wins over their counterparts from Washington, however. The Cal JV outdistanced its rival by four seconds while the Bear frosh bested the Huskies by a half length. Both the JV and the frosh boats remain undefeated on the season and are the No. 1 seeds at the Pac-10 championships in their respective events.

COACHS MEGAPHONE: It seems like its been a long time since the Washington dual, said coach Steve Gladstone. My crews are looking forward to going back into battle.

ABOUT STEVE GLADSTONE: Regarded as one of the premier coaches in the United States, Steve Gladstone is in his second year in his second stint as head coach of the Golden Bears. Gladstone, who also coached at Cal from 1972-80, guided the Bears to their best season in a decade in 1997, culminating in a third-place finish by the varsity eight at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) national championship.

During his previous tenure at Cal from 1972-80, Gladstone guided the Bears to three undefeated dual race seasons, an IRA title, and a Pac-10 championship. Gladstone served as the Director of Rowing Operations at Brown University from 1981-94. During his time at Brown, Gladstones crews amassed four Eastern Sprints championships, five IRA championships and two National Collegiate Rowing Championship titles.
