Bears Open Season: The California men's and women's cross country teams open the 1998 season this weekend at the Nevada Invitational. The meet takes place on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Reno, Nev., at Hidden Valley Regional Park. The women start off the day at 8:45 a.m. with their 5,000-meter race followed by the men's 4 mile at 9:30 a.m.
Head Coach: California head coach Tony Sandoval will once again lead the Golden Bears this season. This marks Sandoval's seventh season as head coach of the men's and women's teams. He has been a part of the Bears program since 1982.
Last Year: The Cal men finished seventh at the Pac-10 Conference Championships as the women finished eighth. Cal standout runners included Peter Gilmore (Pacific Palisades/Pacific Palisades HS) who took fifth place in the men's competition and Elisa Riedy (Fremont/Mission San Jose HS) who claimed sixth place in the women's competition. At the NCAA Western Regional, the men's team finished eighth out of 21 teams and the women finished ninth out of 25 teams. Riedy qualified for the NCAA Championships by claiming eighth place in the overall women's race. The first Cal woman to compete in the NCAA meet, Riedy finished in 52nd place with a time of 17:36.
In 1998, Riedy returns for her senior season, while Gilmore is a junior.
On the Horizon: The Bears next compete at the Fresno Invitational on Saturday, September 19. Competition begin at 10 a.m., at Fresno's Woodward Park.
