SAN FRANCISCO - The California men's soccer team scored two second half goals to come away with a 3-1 win over the University of San Francisco Thursday night. The Bears improve to 8-10-1 overall, while USF drops to 5-14-1.
Freshman striker Chris Roner gave Cal an early 1-0 lead 35 seconds into the match. Roner received a through ball from defender Michael Congiu, which he deposited in the goal.
USF posted the equalizer in the 28th minute on a penalty kick goal by Alex Akerjordet. The penalty kick was the first goal Bears keeper Matt Katz has allowed in his career (697 scoreless minutes).
Sophomore striker Kendall Simmonds tallied the game-winning goal for Cal in the 54th minute, converting on a feed from Justin Rackleff.
Junior striker John Macdonald gave Cal an insurance goal in the 88th minute on a penalty kick.
The game was very physical as eight yellow cards and two red cards were evenly distributed between both teams. Rackleff will miss Sunday's season finale against Stanford because of his red card.
The Bears look to wrap up the 1998 campaign on a high note Sunday against No. 12 Stanford at 1 p.m. at Witter Field.
