BEARS TRAVEL TO STANFORD: The Cal men's and women's track and field team travels to the Stanford Invitational this weekend. The Bears have competed in three outdoor meets this season, with the men posting a 5-2 dual meet record and the women sporting a 4-3 dual meet record.
HEAD COACH ERV HUNT: California head coach Erv Hunt is in his 27th season with the Golden Bears, 26th as head coach. Hunt served as head coach of the U.S. men's track and field team at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, becoming the third Cal coach to hold that lofty title (Brutus Hamilton, 1952; Walter Christie, 1924). At Cal, Hunt owns a 182-60 (.753) men's dual meet record in 26 seasons, including 5-2 this season, and a 36-18 (.667) women's dual meet record in six seasons, including 4-3 this season. His coaching staff includes associate head coach Tony Sandoval and assistants Robyne Johnson, Joy Margerum, Ed Miller and Randy Ziraldo.
HAMMERING AWAY: Junior Nadia Lopez broke her own school record in winning the hammer at the Cal Invitational, going 163-11 to break her old mark of 163-3. Lopez also won the discus (154-10) and finished third in the shot put (41-10.75) at the Cal Invite, and she won the shot put and finished second in the discus at the USC Invitational. On the men's side, two-time All-American Travis Nutter won the hammer at the Cal Invitational (212-9) and the UCLA Invitational (211-9), to go along with his second place finish at the USC Invitational (206-4). Nutter's throw at the Cal Invite was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and a Pac-10 qualifying mark. Junior transfer Jon Paxton won the shot put at the Cal Invite, throwing a PR 51-0.75. Senior Mark Davis posted a Pac-10 qualifying mark of 172-4 in the discus to finish third at the UCLA Invite.
GOING THE DISTANCE: Junior Elissa Riedy won both the 800m (2:09.33) and the 1500m (4:25.92) at the UCLA Invitatational. She is an NCAA provisional qualifier in the 1500m (4:21.95 to win the Cal Invite) and a Pac-10 qualifier in both the 800m and 1500m. Junior Lori Riedy won the 3,000m at the UCLA Invite in a PR and Pac-10 qualifying time of 9:43.34. She is also a Pac-10 qualifier in the 5,000, running 17:15.62 to win the event at the Cal Invite. For the Golden Bear men, junior Simon Mudd qualified for the Pac-10 meet in the 5000m with a winning time of 14:33.63. He also posted a win in the 1500m (3:56.95) at the Cal Invitational.
FULL SPEED AHEAD: Junior Latasha Gilliam scored a sprint double at the UCLA Invitational, winning the 200m (24.60) and the 400m (54.49). She also scored a double at the Cal Invite, winning the 100m (12.02) and 200m (24.21), and is a Pac-10 qualifier in all three events. Freshman Zhauntel Holman finished second in the 100m in a Pac-10 qualifying time of 11.97. For the men, freshman Jason Manly finished second in the 100m in a PR and Pac-10 qualifying time of 10.68 and also finished third in the 200m (21.69). Senior Anders Lustgarten posted his second win of the season and qualified for the Pac-10 meet in the 400m (47.52).
HURDLERS HEAT UP: Junior Coke Edmon finished second in the 400m hurdles at the UCLA Invite in a season-best 53.22, with Shannon Maas taking third place (53.85). Edmon is a Pac-10 qualifier in the 400m hurdles, while senior Cameron Cleeton qualifed for the Pac-10 meet in the 100m hurdles with a 14.69 clocking to finish second at the USC Invite. On the women's side, junior Nneka Black finished third in both the 100m hurdles (15.10) and the 400m hurdles (62.17) at the UCLA Invite.
LEAPS AND BOUNDS: Sophomore Chris Ferreira won the men's long jump at the UCLA Invitational (23-9). Sophomore Pat Leonard won the men's high jump at the USC Invite, clearing 6-9.75 and qualifying for the Pac-10 Championships.
CAL'S NCAA QUALIFERS: WOMEN (1 mark, 1 athlete) - Elissa Riedy (1500m, provisional). MEN (1 mark, 1 athlete) - Travis Nutter (hammer, provisional).
CAL'S PAC-10 QUALIFIERS: WOMEN (12 marks, 6 athletes) - Latasha Gilliam (100m, 200m, 400m), Zhauntel Holman (100m), Elissa Riedy (800m, 1500m), Ally Lombardi (800m), Genevieve DeBose (1500m), Lori Riedy (3000m, 5000m), Nadia Lopez (hammer, discus).
