LAST WEEK: The California women's swim team
(6-1) defeated Pepperdine, 180.5-117.5, and Fresno State, 183-111, Sun., Nov. 8 in dual meet competition at Fresno State. The Bears captured 11 of 14 swimming events and one diving event, and four swimmers won two or more events each. Junior Waen Minpraphal (Bangkok, Thailand) led the Bears, winning three events - the 100 back (58.33), the 200 back (2:06.92) and the 100 fly (57.62). Senior Marylyn Chiang (The Pas, Manitoba, Canada) won the 200 free (1:54.28) and the 200 IM (2:06.54), while freshmen Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore) and Alice Henriques (New Hope, PA) also performed well for the Bears, winning two events apiece. Yeo took the 100 (1:04.37) and 200 breast (2:18.51), producing Cal's 10th best all time mark in the 200 breast. Henriques placed first in the 200 fly (2:06.73) and the 500 free (5:06.08). Freshman Emily Schum (Thousand Oaks, CA) also captured the three- meter diving competition with a score of 236.10.
HEAD COACH TERI MCKEEVER: Teri McKeever is in her seventh season as Cal's women's swimming head coach. McKeever has a 59-28 (.678) dual meet record with the Golden Bears and a 113-50 (.693) overall record (five years as women's coach at Fresno State). She has led Cal to a 15th place NCAA finish in 1993, a 21st place finish in 1994, a 28th place finish in 1995, a 17th place finish in 1996, a ninth place finish in 1997 and an eighth place finish in 1998. Michael Walker, recently named co-head coach by McKeever, enters his fifth season at Cal.
NOTING BYU: Last season the Cougars had a 9-1 dual meet record and a second place finish at the WAC Championship. BYU (4-0) is led by junior Sarah McKeever, who won the 200 fly (2:01.89) last season at the conference championship. The Bears lead the series against the Cougars, 3-0, with Cal last defeating the Cougars, 144-99, Nov. 8, 1996 in Provo, UT.
BEAR NOTES: So far this season, two Cal swimmers have automatically qualified for the NCAAs in two individual events, seven swimmers have earned NCAA consideration in 11 events, and the Bears have broken two Cal dual meet records. Chiang won and automatically qualified for NCAAs in the 100 backstroke (53.74), setting a new Cal dual meet record against Nevada, San Jose State and Washington on Oct. 31. Chiang also captured first in the 200 backstroke earning a consideration time of 1:59.64. Chiang placed first in the 100 free (50.55) and first in the 100 fly (54.97), earning NCAA consideration in both events against Auburn on Oct. 18. Against San Jose, Nevada and Washington, senior Elli Overton (Sydney, Australia) also won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.59), placing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.97) and capturing first in the 200 individual medley (2:03.06), earning consideration in all three events.
Against Auburn, Overton placed first in 400 IM (4:21.09) and second in the 200 fly (2:02.52), earning NCAA consideration in both events. On Oct. 31, Minpraphal finished second in the 200 butterfly (1:59.91), automatically qualifying for NCAAs, while Yeo finished second in the 100 butterfly (55.01) in front of junior Amy Simpson (Visalia, CA) who finished third (55:85). Both Yeo and Simpson earned consideration times in the 100 butterfly. Against Auburn, Yeo captured the 200 free (1:50.07), while earning NCAA consideration time. The Bears 200 medley relay (Haley Cope (Chico, CA), Hanna Jaltner (Vaxjo, Sweden), Simpson, Andrienne Mattos (Mountain View, CA), 1:44.44) finished first, set a dual meet pool record, earned NCAA consideration, as well as set a new Cal dual meet record against Auburn.
