Spieker Aquatics Complex - The No. 4 Stanford women's swim team (9-2, 4-1 in Pac-10) narrowly defeated the No. 6 Bears (11-3, 4-2 in Pac-10), 153-145, Saturday afternoon in Berkeley. Together Stanford and Cal broke six Spieker Pool records and won seven swimming events apiece, while the Bears set four Cal dual meet records.
Senior Marylyn Chiang, who won the 100 back with a new Spieker Pool record time of 54.07, led the Bears. Chiang also placed first in the 100 free (49.99) and was a member of the winning 400 free relay (Kolbisen, Yeo, Omphroy, Chiang, 3:19.75) which set a new Cal dual meet record as well as a new Spieker Pool record. Chiang placed second in the 100 fly with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 53.21, which broke a Cal dual meet record, and she also earned Cal's second best time ever in the 100 fly.
Cal junior Waen Minpraphal automatically qualified for the NCAAs with her win in the 400 IM (4:16.95) and set a new Spieker Pool and Cal dual meet record.
Stanford's win in the 200 medley relay (Fox, Leatherwood, Hyman, Cropper, 1:41.96) also broke a Spieker Pool record, while Cal's second place finish (Cope, Yeo, Minpraphal, Mattos, 1:42.48) earned a new Cal dual meet record. Cardinal sophomore Misty Hyman won the 100 fly (52.68) and 200 fly (1:55.89), also setting new Spieker Pool records, and Stanford junior Catherine Fox also performed well, winning the 50 free (23.26) and the 200 back (1:59.94).
The Bears and the Cardinal both head to the Pac-10 Championship in Federal Way, WA, Feb. 25-27.
