Maier Named Third Team Academic All-American

BERKELEY - After being selected to the District VIII All-American team last month, California senior distance runner Chris Maier was selected third team GTE/CoSIDA academic All-American.

Since transferring to Cal from the Naval Academy in 1996, Maier shined both athletically and academically at Cal. Maier received four first team Academic All-Pac-10 honors - two in track and two in cross country. The Pleasanton, Calif., native also received the Golden Bear award for the highest GPA (3.875) among all male cross country and track and field athletes during the 1998-99 school year. He also was honored as a Neufeld Scholar for the highest GPA for graduating male varsity athletes.

Maier will continue his schooling next year at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston.
