Cal Baseball Hires Dan Hubbs as New Assistant Coach

July 22, 1999

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California has hired Dan Hubbs as assistant baseball coach, it was announced today by new head baseball coach David Esquer.

Hubbs, 28, comes to Cal after an outstanding college pitching career at USC (1990-93) and a stint in the minor leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies from 1993 through June of this year. He has also had experience as the pitching coach of the Yakima Bears (a short-season single A minor league Dodger affiliate in Yakima, WA) and assisted at Pepperdine during this past 1999 college season.

Hubbs joins Esquer, who came to Berkeley after serving as the top assistant to head coach Frank Sanchez at Pepperdine since 1996. Esquer, who was named the Cal head coach June 10, replaced long-time Bear coach Bob Milano.

"I am really looking forward to being back in the Pac-10 and coaching at Cal," said Hubbs. "For my first collegiate coaching job, I couldn't ask for a better situation. I can't wait to begin working with the Cal pitchers and striving for the ultimate goal of winning a national championship."

At USC, Hubbs helped lead the Trojans to the Pac-10 title in 1991 and NCAA Regional appearances (1990, '91, '93) in three of the four years he was involved in the program. Hubbs finished his career at USC with a 19-13 record and a 3.58 ERA. As a senior in 1993, he led the nation in saves with 18 and was tops on the Trojans' squad with 90 strikeouts and a 2.96 ERA.

After the '93 season, Hubbs was named first team All-American by The Sporting News, second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and the College Baseball Writers and third team All-American by Baseball America. He was also a first team All-Pac-10 pick, an All-District 8 second team selection and was named his team's Most Outstanding Pitcher as a senior. During the 1993 NCAA Central II Regional in Austin, TX, he was selected to the all-tournament team for his two appearances against Cal State Fullerton. Against the Titans, Hubbs earned and save in the first game, striking out five batters in two innings, and pitched 8.0 relief innings in the second game to pick up the win (allowing just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven).

On the USC career list, Hubbs is third in career saves (22), fifth in career strikeouts per nine innings (9.19), eighth in career appearances (81) and ninth in career strikeouts (254).

"We are extremely excited about having Dan join our staff," said Esquer. "He provides our program with some valuable expertise, both as a former Pac-10 player, and as a professional ballplayer. Not only is he going to be a tremendous assist as a teacher, but will help us through his associations with winning programs."

Hubbs earned a bachelor's degree in finance from USC in 1993 and was named his school's top scholar-athlete. He and his wife, Alison, reside in Emeryville.
