April 17, 2000

THIS WEEK: Saturday, April 22, Stanford University, Memorial Stadium, 2:00 p.m.

CAL HOSTS RIVAL STANFORD IN FINAL SEASON HOME GAME: California plays host to cross-bay rival Stanford (6-9 overall, 4-2 in the WWLL) inside Memorial Stadium Saturday, April 22nd, in the Bears final home game of the 2000 season. In their first meeting this season, the Bears lost to the Cardinal 6-3 at Stanford on February 26th in just their second game of the year. Freshman goalkeeper Eden Coelho held the Bears defense together with 16 huge saves. Stanford traveled east last week, losing to Columbia University 8-6 on Friday, April 14th, and losing again to Hofstra 18-5 on Sunday, April 16th. Columbia scored just 1:25 into its game with Stanford and never trailed again, grabbing a 2-1 halftime lead. On Sunday, Hofstra raced out to an early 7-0 lead in the first 9:25 of play to defeat Stanford 18-5. Caroline Osterwise and Liz Britt each scored twice for the Cardinal. Hofstra outshot Stanford 27-19 and held a 44-27 advantage on ground balls in the contest.

BEARS UPSET PREVIOUSLY UNDEFEATED AGGIES: UC Davis left Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon with its first loss of the season, a 10-6 decision to an overpowering Golden Bear squad looking to avenge its 8-7 loss to the Aggies last month. And avenge it did, with four different Bears scoring at least two goals apiece in a total team effort that displayed a coordinated offensive drive and a defense that simply shutdown any Davis effort to work itself back into the contest.

UC SANTA CRUZ NO MATCH FOR CALIFORNIA: Junior attacker Chelsea Mao and junior midfielder Sarah Wheatley each scored three goals in the Bears 16-0 victory over UC Santa Cruz Sunday. California cleared the bench early against the Slugs, allowing the starters an opportunity to rest following Saturday's game against Davis while letting their teammates show off some of what they could do out on the field. Ten different Bears scored during the afternoon, a season high.

WHEATLEY AND MONGER LEAD BEARS IN GOALS AND ASSISTS: Junior midfielder Sarah Wheatley currently leads the Bears in scoring with 34 goals (2.26 gpg) and 46 points (3.06 ppg). Sophomore attacker Laura Kado is right behind Wheatley with 28 goals (2.00 gpg). Five different Bears have tallied double-figure goal totals to date. On the assist side of the scoring equation, sophomore attacker Halsey Monger dominates, posting 22 assists thus far into the season, an average of 1.46 per game. Monger is also second on the team in total points with 37 (2.46 ppg). California's numbers demonstrate its commitment to a balanced attack, with 15 different Bears each recording at least one goal and one assist to date.

COELHO RECORDS FOURTH SHUTOUT OF SEASON: Freshman goalkeeper Eden Coelho recorded her fourth shutout of the season against UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, April 16th. The prep All-American currently holds a 0.651 save percentage and a 6.40 goals-against-average.

HEAD COACH JILL MALKO: Jill Malko enters her sixth season at the helm of the Bears. During the 1999 season, Malko led the Bears to a 9-7 overall record (6-3 WWLL) in the sport's first year of intercollegiate status. As the club coach, Malko led Cal to consecutive WWLL Championships in 1996 and 1997. Malko, a 1985 graduate of Boston University, is assisted by Kim Fritz (Gettysburg College '98) and Vale Cervarich (UC Davis '98).
