Racing at Redwood Shores: The No. 1-ranked Cal men's crew will host the No. 3-ranked Washington Huskies, Saturday, April 29 at the Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood City, CA. Racing is slated to begin at 9:20 a.m., with the men's varsity race at 9:30 a.m. On Sunday, April 30, the Bears will play the role of the visitor and will square off against Stanford. This Dual will also be contested at the Redwood Shores Lagoon. Racing on Sunday will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Varsity Eight: Coming off an undefeated Pac-10 and IRA National Championship season in 1999, the Y2K edition of the Cal varsity eight has a very different look. Only two oarsmen, Luke Walton and Graham Taylor, and coxswain Mike Lennig return from the 1999 varsity. The addition of Eric Tiret and Jeremiah Dees from Cal's '99 undefeated national champion JV crew, Scott Frandsen and Christopher Kennelly from Cal's '99 Pac-10 Champion freshman crew and newcomers, Mladen Stegic and Zachery Salwasser have the Bears back at No. 1 and on ready to defend their Pac-10 and IRA varsity titles. Cal is coming off a win in the Copley Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 2, and an exhibition dual race victory over a U.S. National Team composite eight, April 15.

About Washington: The University of Washington varsity eight is currently ranked No. 3 in the USRowing Coaches Poll. The Huskies finished second behind the Bears in San Diego and are coming off dual race victories over Washington State, No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 18 Oregon State.

Washington Dual History: The men's varsity racing series for the Schoch Cup dates back to 1903. Washington leads the series with Cal, 63-25-1. Last year the Bears 11-second victory over the Huskies completed the first Cal sweep in men's eights events of the Huskies in Seattle since 1952.

About Stanford: The Stanford varsity eight is unranked in the USRowing Coaches Poll, but received more votes than any other school not ranked in the Top 20. The Cardinal finished 10th in the Copley Cup event at the San Diego Crew Classic, and have a dual race victory over UC Davis to their credit. They are coming off a defeat at the hands of Oregon State, April 17.

Stanford Dual History: The men's varsity racing series for the Schwabacher Cup dates back to 1902. The Bears lead the series with the Cardinal 49-18. Last year at Redwood Shores, Cal swept Stanford for the ninth consecutive year.

USRowing's Coaches Poll : The Cal men's varsity eight 13 of 15 first place votes in latest USRowing Coaches poll release April 19. The Bears are ranked No. 1 and figure to be atop the new poll scheduled to be released April 26.

About Head Coach Steve Gladstone: Regarded as one of the premier coaches in the United States, Steve Gladstone enters his fourth year in his second stint as head coach of the Golden Bears. In 1999, Gladstone, who also coached at Cal from 1972-80, guided the Bears to their best season since a 1948 Olympic gold medal. Cal men's crews swept the Pac-10 championships before the varsity and JV eights completed undefeated seasons winning Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) national championship titles with the freshman eight finishing second. Gladstone was recognized with Pac-10 Men's Rowing Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season in '99. During his previous tenure at Cal from 1972-80, Gladstone led the Bears to three undefeated dual race seasons, an IRA title and a Pac-10 championship. Gladstone served as the Director of Rowing Operations at Brown University from 1981-94. During his time at Brown, Gladstone's crews amassed four Eastern Sprints championships, five IRA championships and two National Collegiate Rowing championship titles.
