Men's Golf Hits Western On A Roll

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- - The Golden Bears tee off in the Western Intercollegiate tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, CA on Monday and Tuesday, April 3-4, after taking fourth place at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in their last tournament.

Seven of the top 30 teams in the March 22 GolfStat rankings are entered in the 54th annual Western Intercollegiate. Fresno State (#6), Brigham Young (#7), Stanford (#13), Southern California (#15) and defending team champion Washington (#19) top the 20-team field. Oregon State (#22), Kansas (#26) and Oregon (#27) are the other top 30 teams in the field. California, Santa Clara, Texas El Paso, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Pacific, San Diego State, Nevada and host San Jose State complete the field.

All golfers will play 36 holes on Monday beginning at 8:00 a.m. (PST) and return to the par 70, 6, 445 yard course Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. (PST) for the final 18 holes.

Previous Western Intercollegiate winners include well-known professionals Ken Venturi (San Jose State, 1951 and 1953), Johnny Miller (BYU, 1968), Peter Jacobsen (Oregon, 1974), Mark Lye (San Jose State, 1975), Mark O'Meara (Long Beach State, 1978), Bobby Clampett (BYU, 1980) and Duffy Waldorf (UCLA, 1985).
