The No. 3-ranked Cal women's varsity eight defeated the Oregon State Beavers by 6.9 seconds in dual racing on the Redwood Shores Lagoon in Redwood Shores, CA, April 8.
The Bears got off the line quickly and established a boat-length lead in the first 500m of the race. Cal settled to 33 strokes per minute and maintained its lead for the middle 1000m before extending it to open water during the final 500m on the course.
"I'm very proud of both the varsity and JV and crews," said coach Dave O'Neill. "We worked on a number of things in practice this week and the varsity was able to implement these changes in the race today.
"As for the JV, we changed our lineup this week and it paid off. We finished 5 seconds behind the Beavers in the heat at San Diego last week, but today we came out on top."
In the JV race, Cal took control of the race in the early going and extended its lead all the way down the course. Oregon State picked up victories in the novice eight, varsity four and novice B four while the Bears third victory of the day came in the novice A four.
Next weekend the Bears will scrimmage the U.S. National team which will workout at Briones Reservoir on Friday and Saturday. Due to EBMUD restrictions, Cal cannot accommodate spectators. The Bears will return to official racing April 21 and 22 when they will face crews from Northeastern, Radcliffe, Dartmouth and Syracuse.
