BEARS HOST 106TH BIG MEET AT EDWARDS STADIUM
Cal hosts the 106th Big Meet Saturday, May 6, at Edwards Stadium. It's the final home event for Cal this year. Competition begins at 10:30 a.m., with the men's hammer. The first running event is the women's 5000m at 1 p.m. The Golden Bear men hold a 62-41-2 series advantage dating back to 1893. The Cardinal women hold an 11-9 edge dating back to 1980. The Cal men have won 27 of the last 28 Big Meets, including a 90-73 win at Stanford in 1999. The Stanford women won its third-straight Big Meet in 1999, 92-71.
EPSTEIN HONORED FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO CAL TRACK SAT.
David Epstein, a former Cal track and field athlete (1958-61), will be honored Saturday for his philanthropic support of Cal Track and Field with the dedication of the Southwest entrance of the stadium (fan entrance) in his name.
RETURNING CAL BIG MEET CHAMPIONS
Five Cal athletes return to defend their 1999 Big Meet event titles. Those are Phillip Pipersburg (100m), Wayne Boddy (200m, 400m), Zhauntel Holman (100m), Jennifer Joyce (hammer) and Reynda King (triple jump). Also of note, the Bears swept all four relays at Stanford last year.
CALIFORNIA/NEVADA MEET IN REVIEW
The UCLA women continued its dominance of the California/Nevada State Track and Field Championship, winning its second consecutive title with 114 points and sixth in the seven-year history of the meet Sunday at Edwards Stadium. The Cal women finished second with 86 points. The Fresno State men held off defending champion California for an 87-85 victory. The Bears finished second in the final event, the men's 4x400 relay, receiving eight points, instead of the needed 10 to tie the Bulldogs for the team title.
LOPEZ, JOYCE SET SCHOOL RECORDS
Junior Maria Lopez and sophomore Jennifer Joyce each broke her own school record in the pole vault and hammer, respectively, at the California/Nevada meet. Lopez shattered her previous career best mark of 12-3.5, winning the pole vault with an NCAA provisional and Olympic Trials B Standard clearance of 13-0.25. Joyce placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 203-2, surpassing her previous Cal record of 201-4.
KENNEDY, BERKELEY WIN LONG JUMP AND 400 METERS
Freshman Robert Kennedy and senior Chuck Berkeley were the standouts for the Cal men at the California/Nevada meet. Kennedy and freshman teammate Vincent Ibia finished first and second, respectively, in the long jump with leaps of 24-10 and 24-5 (PR). Berkeley won the 400m in a personal best 47.04 and showed everyone he's healthy for the first time in his Cal career .
BEARS YOUNG HURDLERS SHOW OUTSTANDING PROMISE
On the men's side, freshman Ahmad Wright (La Palma, CA), is approaching Cal's top 10 list in the 400m with a Cal season-best mark of 51.54. Wright placed second in that event at the California/Nevada meet. Freshman April Holliverse (Los Angeles) leads the Cal women in the 100mH (14.15) and the 400mH (59.22). She recorded both of those marks at the Cal/Nevada meet, finishing fifth and second, respectively.
