Brad Agoos has been named assistant coach of the California men's soccer team, head coach Kevin Grimes announced Tuesday.
Agoos, 29, is widely regarded as an excellent motivator with a history of winning as a player and coach. He joins the Cal program after spending the last seven years playing professionally, most recently in 1999 for Quick Den Haag of the Dutch Third Division. He also has played professionally for AC Santa Barbara of the Costa Rican First Division, the Worcester Wildfire of the A-League, D.C. United of Major League Soccer, along with three seasons in the USISL and one season in Germany.
"We're thrilled to have Brad join the Cal soccer family," said Grimes, who was hired April 24, as the Bears head coach. "He brings an enormous amount of playing and coaching experience to the team and has been a proven winner in all levels of his career. His experience and enthusiasm for the game will pay great dividends to our players and our recruiting efforts."
In the coaching ranks, Agoos was a volunteer coach in 1998 for the University of San Francisco and in 1996 for the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, which advanced to the NCAA Final Four. Most recently, Agoos was a player and coach for the Vermont Voltage (PDSL). He also has expertise developing youth players, including in 1994-95 when he coached the Park Sharon Soccer Club in Charlotte, N.C.
Agoos' credentials also include a U.S. Soccer Federation B badge and a KNVB Trainer Coach III license.
Prior to joining the professional ranks, Agoos won three national championships as a midfielder at the University of Virginia from 1989-93, under now U.S. national team head coach Bruce Arena. Agoos was named MVP of the 1993 ACC Tournament and currently ranks third all-time for assists in Cavalier history.
"Brad has been under the tutelage of Bruce Arena, arguably the best coach the U.S. has ever produced," said Grimes. "We will count on that experience and championship mentality as we move forward with our program at Cal."
Brad is single and will be moving to the Bay Area from Charlotte, N.C. His brother, Jeff, is a member of the U.S. national team and plays for D.C. United.
