Junior Bolota Asmerom, a long-distance star on the California track and field and cross country teams, has been selected to the second team Men's University Division Spring At-Large GTE Academic All-District VIII team.
To be eligible for consideration for the team, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), must be in at least his second year of participation at the school and must be an important squad contributor.
An African American studies major, Asmerom is coming off a fourth-place finish in the 5000 meters at last weekend's Pac-10 Track and Field Championships. Asmerom vies for All-America recognition in the 5000m in his first appearance at the NCAA Track and Field Championships next week in Durham, N.C. His NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 13:32.48 in that event also meets the U.S. Olympic Trials B standard and is only .48 away from the funded A standard. He also made his first appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships during the fall of 1999.
