Joyce Finishes Fourth in Hammer at NCAA Championships

DURHAM, N.C. - California sophomore Jennifer Joyce finished fourth in the hammer with a throw of 204-1 at the NCAA Championships Wednesday at Wallace Wade Stadium. The Vancouver, B.C., native earned five points for the Bears towards the team competition and earned All-America recognition for her outstanding performance.

The top five finishers in the hammer were the top five qualifiers in the event for NCAAs. Southern Methodist's Florence Ezeh, who entered the meet with the second-best mark, won the hammer with a throw of 211-10. Nebraska's Melissa Price, who was the top qualifier, placed second with a mark of 210-9, while Wyoming's Robin Lyons took third (206-9).

Joyce entered the competition with the fifth-best qualifying mark - a PR and school record throw of 206-3, which she posted May 20 at the Pac-10 Championships. After finishing second to UCLA's Christina Tolson the last two years at the conference meet, Joyce outperformed Tolson on the national stage Wednesday, finishing fourth while Tolson took fifth (203-6).

As a freshman, Joyce placed 15th in the hammer at the NCAA Championships with a mark of 183-9.

Other Cal athletes competing at NCAAs today include Missy Vanek in the first of two days of the heptathlon and Robert Kennedy in the long jump.
