No. 4 Women's Crew Travels To Pac-10 Championships

Racing at Pac-10s: The No. 4-ranked Cal women's varsity eight will challenge for the Pac-10 Championship Sunday, May 14, at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, CA, located just outside Sacramento. Racing is slated to begin at 7:50 a.m. with the women's varsity four heats. The finals begin at 12:40 p.m. The women's novice four will compete at the PCRCs on Saturday, May 13 at Lake Natoma.

Cal Varsity Eight: Cal, which finished third at the 1999 NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, is coming off win over Stanford in the Big Row and a loss to No. 1 Washington in dual racing, April 29-30. Earlier this season, the Bears finished second to Washington at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 2, and have dual race victories over North Carolina, Oregon State and Northeastern and a second place finish behind Radcliffe in a quadrangle that included Syracuse and Dartmouth.

About the Competition: The Washington women's varsity eight is currently ranked No. 1 in the USRowing/CRCA Coaches Poll and is seeded No. 1 in all women's events at Pac-10s. The Huskies are undefeated on the year including a Jessop-Whitier Cup victory at the San Diego Crew Classic. Other Pac-10 women's varsity eights ranked in the Top 20 as of May 3 include, No. 12 USC, No. 15 Oregon State and No 16 Washington State. Other competing Crews include Sac. State which was the top vote recipient not ranked in the Top 20 and the Div. II No. 1 ranked UC Davis.

Pac-10 Championship History: The last time the Bears came away with a varsity Pac-10 or Pacific Coast Rowing Championship was in 1979. Since then the Washington Huskies have won the event all but two times. In 1990 and '91 UCLA claimed the title. The Bears finished second to Washington each of the last three seasons.

About Head Coach Dave O'Neill: Now in his second year at Cal, Dave O'Neill, who garnered Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association, Pac-10 and Independent Rowing News Coach-of-the-Year honors, brings a refreshing perspective to a program with limitless potential. Regarded as one of the finest young coaches in the country, his philosophy, enthusiasm and competitiveness has the Cal women's program headed in the direction of success as they look to build upon a varsity eight bronze medal and sixth-place team finish at the 1999 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship. Before coming to Cal, O'Neill headed the women's program at Boston College for seven years. In the summer of 1998, O'Neill directed the Women's Lightweight Development Camp based out of the Riverside Boat Club. O'Neill graduated from Boston College in 1991 with a B.A. in History.
