No. 1 Cal Crew Set To Defend Pac-10 Title

This Week: Sun. May 14, Pac-10 Championships, Rancho Cordova, CA, All Day Next Race: Thur.-Sat. June 1-3, IRA Championships, Camden, NJ, All Day

Racing at Pac-10s: The No. 1-ranked Cal men's varsity eight will challenge for the Pac-10 Championship Sunday, May 14, at the Pac-10 Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, CA, located just outside Sacramento. Racing is slated to begin at 7:50 a.m. with the women's varsity four heats. The finals begin at 12:40 p.m.

Cal Varsity Eight: Coming off an undefeated Pac-10 and IRA National Championship season in 1999, the Y2K edition of the Cal varsity eight has a very different look. Only two oarsmen, Luke Walton and Graham Taylor, and coxswain Mike Lennig return from the 1999 varsity. The addition of Eric Tiret and Jeremiah Dees from Cal's '99 undefeated national champion JV crew, Scott Frandsen and Christopher Kennelly from Cal's '99 Pac-10 Champion freshman crew and newcomers, Mladen Stegic and Filip Filipic have the Bears back at No. 1 and on ready to defend their Pac-10 and IRA varsity titles. Cal undefeated on the year with victory in the Copley Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic, along with dual race wins over Washington and Stanford to their credit.

About the Competition: The Washington men's varsity eight is currently ranked No. 3 in the USRowing and UW is seeded No. 1 in all men's events at Pac-10s with the exception of the varsity eight where Cal is the top seed. The other Pac-10 men's varsity eight ranked in the Top 20 as of May 3 is No. 18 Oregon State.

Pac-10 Championship History: The Cal men's crew enters this year's Pac-10 Championships as defending champion in each of the men's eight events as well as the team point championship for the past two seasons. The 1998 Cal varsity was the first non-Husky crew to win the championship in the `90s and it was Cal's first varsity title since 1986. Over the years Cal has taken home the Pac-10/Pacific Coast title 20 times.

Gladstone was recognized with Pac-10 Men's Rowing Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season in `99. During his previous tenure at Cal from 1972-80, Gladstone led the Bears to three undefeated dual race seasons, an IRA title and a Pac-10 championship.
