Goodyear, AZ -
Cal golf made a 1-2 sweep of the prestigouis Southwestern Amateur Tournament that concluded this past weekend on June 10. The tournament was played at the Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Arizona and marked the 85th renewal of the tournament.
Running away with medalist honors was senior Robert Hamilton who routed the 99-player field with a 16-under score of 272 during the four rounds. Cal redshirt Dong Yi also had a fine tournament as he finished in a tie for second with a 7-under score of 281. He tied with Alex Kujumjian for second place honors.
Hamilton started the tournament with a 71 and then got red hot with consecutive scores of 67, 66 and 68. Yi was in the hunt early as he had scores of 68, 68, 73 and 72.
Head coach Steve Desimone said he was thrilled with the tournament results. "This is a very important amateur tournament and going 1-2 speaks volumes about our program," said Desimone. "Robert has been playing great golf, but he just hasn't been making a lot of putts. He obviously did in this tournament.
In other Cal golf news, Desimone reported that senior Han Lee received honorable mention All-America honors as named by the coaches association. Lee helped Cal to a tie for No. 17 at the NCAA Tournament a week ago in Alabama, and had won the U.S. Intercollegiate Tournament in early May at the Stanford Golf Course.
