The No. 1-ranked Cal men's varsity eight won it's third consecutive San Diego Crew Classic Copley Cup Championship, April 8, on Mission Bay. The Bears are two-time undefeated defending national champions. For the record it was Cal's fourth Copley Cup title all time.
"I'm proud of the crew," said coach Steve Gladstone. "The varsity was aggressive off the start and wasn't waiting for the race to unfold. They went for it from the very first stroke."
The Bears took the early lead in the race and had nearly a length by the 500-meter mark with Yale, Oregon State, Penn and Washington trailing in that order. By the 1000, the Huskies had taken over second position, but Cal had five seconds on UW. Cal rowed clean through the final 1000 and finished nine seconds up.
The men's JV entered the Sunday final as the pre-race favorite, in the early going it was clear that they would need to make it a come from behind victory. Washington emerged from the pack as the early leader and Cal maintained contact four seats down as the crews crossed the 500-meter mark. Cal pushed to make up the margin, but could not make progress as the two crews had an open water lead over the other boats in the race. As the crews came into the final 500m Washington had moved out a one-length lead, but Cal could not make up the four-second deficit.
The Cal freshman came into its Men's Collegiate Novice grand final with the fastest qualifying time, but knew that they would need to battle Washington for the Crew Classic title. Within the first 250 metes of the race, the two strong crew had moved out on the field and turned the six boat final into at dual race. The Huskies began to creep away from Cal as the crews crossed the 500-meter mark. The Huskies extended their lead to nearly a length and countered a late push from the Bears. Cal finished four seconds off Washington's pace.
The Cal men's open eight, which was comprised of 3rd varsity and 2nd frosh oarsmen, came up short against Hooter's and Los Gatos.
