BERKELEY -
Ten decathletes and nine heptathletes compete in the first day of the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships tomorrow (May 12) at Edwards Stadium beginning at 11 a.m. The final five events of the decathlon, and the final three events of the heptathlon are slated for Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
Admission is FREE.
California has won the last four conference decathlon titles and is the defending champion in the heptathlon. However, Bevan Hart, the 1999 and 2000 decathlon winner, graduated last year, and Missy Vanek, the defending heptathlon champion, is redshirting this year with a stress fracture in her back.
That leaves the door open for this year's favorites - Santiago Lorenzo (Oregon) in the decathlon and Whitney Evans (Washington State) in the heptathlon. UCLA's Michelle Perry posted the top qualifying mark in the heptathlon (5,657 points), but the Bruin coaching staff has opted to hold her out of Pac-10s until next weekend when she is expected to be a prominent scorer, as well.
California will be represented by junior Matt Blair in the decathlon and junior Shawna Adkins in the heptathlon.
