ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -
The Cal men's golf team opened play at the NCAA West Regionals with a disappointing score of 20-over-par 308 Thursday.
The Bears find themselves in 24th place in the 27-team field with two more rounds to go.
Texas leads the competition at 3-under-par 295, followed by San Diego State (289), Fresno State (290), Minnesota (290) and UNLV (290).
Senior Walter Chun shot Cal's low score during the morning round with a 2-over-par 74. Peter Tomasulo came home at 3-over-par 75, while Jeff Hood shot 79, Scott Carlyle 80 and Chris Ancheta 82. Texas' Jason Hartwick is the individual leader after shooting 68.
The Bears started the day on the 10th hole. Chun made the turn at 2-under-par, while Tomasulo was at even par. However, the Cal team shot a combined 10-over-par over the next four holes before leveling out.
The West Regional continues through Saturday with the Top 10 teams advancing to the national championships May 29-June 1 at Ohio State.
