The Cal men's golf team made a big move up the leaderboard on the second day of the NCAA West Regionals Friday afternoon at New Mexico.
The Bears, who entered the day in 24th place, shot the low round of the day, a 2-under-par 286. As a result, Cal is now alone in 15th place with a two-day total of 594. The Bears' score represented an improvement of 22 strokes from their Thursday round.
UNLV leads the three-day, 27-team event at 6-over-par 582, while Fresno State (583) and Washington (584) are close behind. The Top 10 teams after Saturday's final round advance to the NCAA championships at Ohio State later this month. For the Bears to go, they will need to make up five strokes on Pepperdine and Pacific, who are tied for 10th at 589.
Individually, sophomore Peter Tomasulo improved to 3-under-par 69 after opening with a 75 Thursday. With an even par 144, Tomasulo is tied for 10th. In addition, Jeff Hood was under par with a 70, while senior Walter Chun finished with a 72. Scott Carlyle (75) and Chris Ancheta (75) both lowered their scored dramatically from disappointing first rounds.
