BERKELEY, Calif. -
The University of California men's gymnastics team had five of its gymnasts selected as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference Tuesday.
MPSF Co-Gymnast of the Year junior Cody Moore (3.34 GPA, Physics) joins senior Suhail Arastu (3.09, Classics), sophomore David Eaton (3.29, Sociology), junior Aaron Floyd (3.17, Mathematics) and senior Tom Kutz (3.05, Environmental Economics) in receiving the honor. All five played key roles in the Bears' success this season, with Moore, Eaton and Kutz competing in nearly every event at every meet during the regular season.
Cal's five tied for the second most selections in the conference, trailing only Stanford (six).
The criteria for such a selection are that 1) the student must have a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA, 2) the student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at the member institution prior to the season for which the award is being received and must be at least a sophomore academically and 3) the student-athlete must have competed in fifty percent or more of the institution's competition in the student's respective sport.
For Moore, this completes a 2002 season in which he has received a myriad of awards. Besides being named the MPSF Co-Gymnast of the Year and having a 3.34 GPA, the physics major was also named to the US National Gymnastics team in February, and won both the NCAA and MPSF title in the parallel bars.
The team completed another top-notch season early in April, finishing with a 15-3 regular season record, claming third place at the NCAA competition in Norman, Oklahoma.
