BERKELEY -
Seniors Jennifer Joyce and Bubba McLean earned second team Verizon Academic All-District VIII honors in the track and field/country category Thursday.
Joyce is the Canadian and Cal national record holder in the hammer at 214-0. With that mark, the All-American from Vancouver heads to her fourth-straight NCAA Championships next week with the second-best mark in the nation. She also is slated to compete in the discus with the seventh-best performance in the country at 178-3. The French and American studies major garnered honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honors as a junior and was selected to the second team as a sophomore.
McLean is set to compete in his second NCAA Championships in the pole vault. He earned All-America honors by taking fifth in the pole vault at the 2001 NCAAs. The Kula, Hawaii, native won the pole vault at the Big Meet this year with a personal-best clearance of 18-0.5, making him only the third Cal athlete ever to vault at least 18 feet. The political science major also was a second team Academic All-Pac-10 pick in 2001.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-District team, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), must be in at least their second year of participation at the school and must be an important squad contributor.
